I have been thinking about this a lot recently. Both the UK and the US had a seismic event in 2016. Based on lies, populism, xenophobia, and bigotry – with lots of help from Russia, our fellow citizens ceded control to far right batshit cray cray ideals. For you Trump, for us Brexit. So here we are, in the midst of a pandemic, our economies in ruins, our family and friend’s dead, people queuing in both countries at food banks. My government has such a majority that they get to break international law with impunity. Your government would not recognise law if it jumped up and kicked it hard in its lardy orange arse.
And so today we see lawlessness on the streets ( I am talking about the boogaloo’s and vigilantes), families barely or not coping under the economic strain that they have wrought and a tribalism from the right that defeats logic every day.
When I stayed up and saw the result of the referendum, I knew that logic had lost to lies, populism, xenophobia, and bigotry. When I stayed up and watched the results of the US election, I knew that logic had lost to lies, populism, xenophobia, and bigotry. Both times I sobbed and turn off the news for 24 hours, cause I could not even. 2016 sucked and 2020 is of course the predicted outcome.
And here we are. Trump trying to steal the election. A no deal Brexit, and all that infers, in the New Year. Deaths and excess deaths beyond despair. We need to get serious about what it means to be progressive, what it means to be liberal, these fucking populists are kicking our arses because they do not care about breaking the rules. And you have to be in power to change shit. 2016 was the portend to the nightmare that is 2020. Gird up your loins, on both sides of the pond it is time to fight to put these last 4 years where they need to be…. 1930’s Germany be like welcome back! They need to go back where they came from. Stat.

So not only does Trump want to bounce a conservative into SCOTUS before the election, to try and steal the democratic outcome, he wants to put a women hating woman, freedom denying batshit cray cray theocracy dreaming extremist in the seat. One might suggest that Amy Coney Barrett is a tad touched in the head – something that you can say about religious zealots of all stripes. Her particular catholic cult despises women and she buys into that misogyny. She must really dislike herself to cling onto an ideal that demands she submit to her husband in all things. I know I do not need to spell this out, but I am going to anyway, make no mistake she is a real and present danger to the democracy of America, if the Senate bounces her into SCOTUS before the election. Feinstein said of and too her in 2017 "The conclusion one draws is that the dogma lives loudly within you, and that's of concern when you come to big issues that large numbers of people have fought for years in this country."
There are profound implications on reproductive justice, LGBTQI rights and voting rights if this particular zealot gets her democracy stealing hands on the levers of justice. Just look at examples from actual theocratic states to see where they are trying to take America. They want something that looks remarkably similar to patriarchy wrapped in religious fervour for power over and oppression of everyone in society. Never mind the separation of church and state, that is just a pesky detail when you are actively plotting a coup in plain sight, and God (cough, the devil) has told all of them that they MUST ensure widespread legitimised oppression especially around gender, sexual orientation and race. That it is their biblical duty to ensure women have little political capital and agency. They want to take away the power of people to make their own life choices, choices, in their wannabee world, can only made within the prism of their zealotry. That mind set taken to the extreme is knocking at the door of the highest court in the land. Terrifying.

Yep - pretty much sums it up. Who knew they could fuck it up so badly?!?! Shortly after the referendum I had a chat with a friend who voted yes. I told him I was cross with him, not about wanting to leave but because he failed to look at the leadership pf the country and consider whether they were up to the job of making Brexit a success when it was so obvious to anyone with a brain cell that we were run by a bunch of elitist shallow thinkers who would not know how to negotiate their way out of a paper bag, and that was before Johnson and his far right empire wannabees seized control of the levers of power. It was always going to be hard, but a white male cabinet of sycophants rather than talent, have taken the mess that was inevitable to another level of shitness that is going to hit this country hard... and they could not give a shit - because in their white supremacist tiny brains they are still living in times of power and politics when what we had to say mattered on the world stage in any meaningful way. Fun times. 👀

How many millions did they pay out to the family for a justified killing? Oh, 12 million. Why would they pay out without cause? Just fucking ridiculous. No justice, no peace. As Louisville police chief Robert Schroeder said the authorities would not tolerate any “Violence or destruction of property. We are prepared to meet any challenge we may face” Of course they won't stand back, they want the confederacy back. Emboldened fascists love cracking black skulls, oh and shooting black people in the back, oh and shooting them for breathing, oh an putting their knees on their necks until they die. And finally being a bunch of fucking cowardly wankers who are scared about policing by consent, because power and supremacy.

Trump era 2020 is full on danger zone for democracy and the rule of law. We have seen this game played before. They think they have got enough control of all the various levers of power to go full on totalitarian. I reckon that they are underestimating the free will of the majority of the American people. They are going to do everything they can to ensure fascism wins through nefarious measures. But if history tells us anything at all is that fascism always fails in the end, but it needs to be stopped NOW, while we are in the danger zone, rather than if we enter the end zone... that will take much longer to fix, many more deaths and bloody violence on the streets, and all of that is exhausting to even think about.
