Here they go again. Once more, Senate Republicans are trying to dismantle the Affordable Care Act. This renewed assault is a shameful exploitation of Sen. John McCain’s (R-Ariz.) death. While praising his character, commitment to duty and faithfulness to the rules of democratic governance in public, privately Republicans are using the same tricks McCain rejected as inconsistent with regular order and deliberative democracy to ram through a wildly unpopular repeal of the ACA.

Senate Republicans’ new attempts to defund a system that has lowered healthcare costs and expanded coverage for millions of Americans is bad policy, bad politics and an undemocratic assault on representative government.

This latest attack on the ACA reveals Republicans’ complete lack of democratic values. Barely a year ago, an elected Congress rejected two attempts to repeal the ACA. Now, Senate leaders want to try again, after McCain’s swing vote is replaced by an unelected, caretaker Senator. This is a total subversion of the democratic process. The American people have spoken and they do not want repeal.

It’s obviously way too early for anyone to have a realistic sense of who is going to prevail in Democrats’ large field of 2020 presidential candidates, but it’s never too early to start breathless speculation about at least parts of it.

President Donald Trump thinks his level of patience it is not just great. It is better than anyone else’s in the entire planet.

Trump’s comments came during an interview with Bloomberg on Thursday in the Oval Office.

At the time of his remarks, the President was talking about North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

“I have greater patience than any human being in the world,” Trump told Bloomberg News in a White House interview. “People don’t understand that about me.”

It seems like every day brings another outrageous story of the Trump administration’s racist policies, but even in a year that brought us children separated from their parents at the border and held in cages this story from the Washington Post on Wednesday stands out as a dark moment for American history.

The report revealed that Trump’s State Department is now denying passports to US citizens of Hispanic descent who live near the US-Mexico border, bringing their citizenship into question.

The story reports: “The Trump administration is accusing hundreds, and possibly thousands, of Hispanics along the border of using fraudulent birth certificates since they were babies, and it is undertaking a widespread crackdown.”

This kind of behaviour is perhaps dismally unsurprising, coming as it does from a president who began his campaign by calling Mexicans “rapists”. The policy of separating the children of illegal immigrants from their parents at the border was itself completely indefensible and monstrous.

But the fact that American citizenship, an American birth certificate, is no longer any bar to being targeted by Trump’s enforcement agencies is a sign that we may have entered a dangerous and dark new phase.
