About Me

I am a Brit. I am a working class child of the troubles in Belfast who now lives a life of privilege. I am an anti-racist, progressive monster for truth. If I fail in being that monster, call me out....

Just in case you missed it...

Hello lovelies

We launched the October photography contest today and it all about roads!

I figure, as the vast majority of DU (not me of course) live in a country which I would guess has more roads that anywhere else on the planet, many of you have delightful pictures, from road trips etc, that you may wish to share. I was wondering if you might pop along and check it out and maybe submit something marvellous for DU's delectation.

I have two OPs to share:

Firstly the submission thread - where I know you will flock to post with aplomb!

Secondly the comment thread. If you want to share a picture and are not sure how, pop along here and we lovely folks in Photography will talk you through the process.

Just a heads up Loungers, I can nag like a nagging mans nagging things... no-one wants to see that! So please go forth and enjoy this competition. All comers welcome and we LOVE to see DUers join in who have not done so in the past.

Whoot whoot. This thread is for questions, comments and idle picci chatter about the October Photography Contest.

It is that time of the month again. The submission thread for the competition is here:

Please pop along and make sure you submit a picci. HAB's theme is "Roadscapes, rural or urban, old or new". which is great! Also please cast the DU net far and wide and prompt others who you know would be interested in getting involved but who may for whatever reason missed the launch, or are hesitant to get involved.

📸📸📸The October Photography Contest is now LAUNCHED. Yay. 📸📸📸

Hello my fine fellow DU lovelies. This is the official submission thread for the October Photography Contest. The theme has been decided by the marvellous HAB911 who won the August contest.

The theme this month is:

"Roadscapes, rural or urban, old or new".

This thread will be closed to new submissions on the 2Oth October at 1700 GMT, or earlier if we hit 30 submissions, so don't leave it until the last minute as you may miss out.

Important bits from the RULES Please keep your entry no larger than 1024 pixels in its longest dimension and under 675K in file size and limit photo editing to a reasonable amount. We would prefer your photo look like a photograph instead of a digital design. If you aren’t sure, ask the group in a separate thread. You’ll get plenty of feedback to specific questions. If you need help posting a photograph or with image sizing, just ask. You can find the rest of the rules for the competition here: https://www.democraticunderground.com/103673624 if you need further clarification.

As per usual, one submission per photographer and entries are to be the original work of the submitting photographer . If I open it up for a second entry, I will of course let you know through the Photography Group. However, I really would love to see 30 separate entries so will be nagging and kicking for the next seven days. Surprise!

If you want to chat or have a question about the competition come find us here on a thread opened for this specific purpose:

Please make sure that you include a title in your submission.

An entrant to this contest, by submitting a photograph, is giving permission for that photograph to be copied to Demopedia or to a linked Gallery and included in a DU Calendar that will display the photographs entered for this contest for the purpose of publicizing future contests and/or commemorating current and past contests. The entrant retains all other rights to the photograph being submitted. Neither Demopedia and/or a linked Gallery may use any photograph submitted for any purpose other than to display the photograph being submitted by the entrant, and neither gains any real or implied ownership rights to the photograph.

And now without further ado your competition is open.

Shall we play spot the difference?

He wanted to have the job.

He never wanted to do the job.

He is wholly unsuitable for any form of public service.

He is too idle and too irresponsible to be given any kind of important job.

He surrounded himself with a cabinet of comparable moronic, clueless, blundering, ethic and morality free clowns, who are far right power-hungry sycophants pursuing the most extreme set of policies the county has seen in living memory (at the very least).

His folly, his chronic lack of judgement and his utterly dazzling levels of incompetence could lead to a very grim future for the liberal democratic settlement of his nation.

His mediocre populism continues to have the support of c40% of the electorate.

His legacy will be the poisoning of civic and civil society for the next generation at least.

You could toss a coin, right? What the flip has happened to our post World War Two liberal democratic settlement. We are at a moment of legitimate peril in the English speaking west. At least you had the sense to tell Trump to do one, even if he refuses to go. We are stuck with BoJo for at least another two years. Doomed we are. Fun times.

...if the GOP could win elections they would

We see from January 6th that they are entering the outright violence stage to cling onto power by any means necessary.

NEWSFLASH: cheating foreigners is a core part of the job

Dominic Cummings on the negotiation of the NI Protocol:

They never intended to stick to the deal. They lied throughout the negotiation to bounce the UK into the harshest of Brexits and now the GFA is under threat by these lying English nationalists posh boy thugs.

As James O'B has just brilliantly said: Rule Britannia. Britannia Waves The Rules. This is where we are now

Barge Living

Move along. Nothing to see here...👀

They need to get this pesky being held to account schtick over and done with asap. Trump is signalling that they should stand by again and they need to get to insurrecting.

''Like the vanquished Confederates, the KKK and the Nazis, today’s right-wing extremists make victims out of the guilty to justify their intensifying fascism'' Noah Berlatsky

Stupid and delusional, with limited consequences to their actions- a deadly combination.

Robert Reich: Supreme court, Facebook, Fed: three horsemen of democracy's apocalypse

These three power centers – the supreme court, the Fed and the biggest tech firms – have huge and increasing effects on our lives, yet they are less and less answerable to us.

Beware. Democracy depends on accountability. Accountability provides checks on power. If abuses of power go unchallenged, those who wield it will only consolidate their power further. It’s a vicious cycle that erodes faith in democracy itself.

Very interesting analysis at the link. It does feel like the west is on the cusp of something and it could go either way.

And in the comment section of the article...this:

Apparently, the Trump rally has a Braveheart theme.

Good grief. ''...they may take our lives, but they'll never take... OUR FREEDUMB!''
