DALLAS (AP) — The Latest on Gov. Greg Abbott’s plan to improve school safety following the deadly shooting at a Texas high school (all times local):

2:15 p.m.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s recommendations on improving school safety DO NOT include any major restrictions on guns in the state.

The plan unveiled Wednesday by Abbott includes dozens of recommendations on topics including security at schools, mental health, crime prevention efforts and firearm safety.

Abbott is proposing a change to the state law that says guns can’t be made accessible to children under 17, with exceptions such as hunting or parent supervision.
He’s encouraging the Legislature to consider changing the age to include 17-year-olds.

2:30 p.m.

Many of Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s recommendations on how to improve school safety revolve around increasing security at schools and mental health awareness.

Among recommendations Abbott revealed Wednesday are that campuses by “hardened” by actions that could include creating vestibules where doors must by remotely unlocked before visitors can enter, installing metal detectors and having an alarm that would signal there’s an active shooter.

He also suggested the Legislature consider requiring the Texas Education Agency to create a formal review process of school districts’ safety audits.

Other recommendations included training more teachers and school employees to carry handguns on campus.

Abbott is also recommending an expansion of a program that identifies students at risk of committing violence and provides help for them.

He also wants to increase the number of people trained to identify signs of mental illness and increase awareness of a state system that allows people to report people who may be a threat and suspicious activity.

Wonder who's fighting Trump? Meet the #Resistance

A good read about origins of the #TheResistance.
Soon after the election of Donald Trump, a loose alliance began coalescing around the goal of resisting Trump's vision for America.

From Richard Painter, Scott Dworkin, John Schindler, to Evan McMullin & others, joined forces for a unified purpose, each bringing their own methods & populace & how the many who joined in loosely under The Resistance hashtag have grown in their purpose & outreach.

GOOD READ.

We all do what we can

Idaho GOP candidate calls for executing women who end pregnancies
By Matthew Chapman - April 3, 2018

At a Republican candidate forum for Idaho lieutenant governor, state Sen. Bob Nonini stated that he believed women who seek abortions should be put to death on a “case by case” basis.

The forum was hosted by the Christian podcast CrossPolitic, who posed the question of whether women should face capital punishment for abortion. Nonini responded, “Yes. There should be no abortion and anyone who has an abortion should pay.”

Astonishingly, the hosts and another Republican candidate at the forum, former Idaho GOP chairman Steve Yates, did not seem bothered by Nonini’s answer.

Nonini tried to half soften his statement a few hours later, saying “no woman has ever been prosecuted” for abortion for “practical reasons” and that his wife disagrees with his stance on the death penalty. But he stopped short of actually taking back his words.

Imposing the death penalty for terminating a pregnancy is unthinkable, but Nonini has a history of horrific anti-woman behavior.

SNIP
Idaho is full of Republican politicians hostile to abortion rights.

State Sen. Dan Foreman, who has drawn national scrutiny and an ethics investigation for screaming at his own constituents, has written legislation to make abortion punishable as first-degree murder.

And one independent gadfly candidate in Idaho was so fixated on the issue that he legally changed his name to “Pro-Life”.

Nor is this zealotry limited to Idaho. Two Republican lawmakers in Ohio recently introduced a bill that would ban all abortions and potentially open doctors who perform them to wrongful death suits, life imprisonment, or execution.

And Kentucky State Rep. Dan Johnson, who took his own life last year after being accused of child molestation, had a bill in the works to make some miscarriages a crime.

Republicans this extreme are making laws like this all over the country.
It will be up to voters to reject their authoritarian control of women.

And Repubs are seating Federal Judges of this extreme rigid thought, also

"..They went with songs to the battle, they were young, Straight of limb, true of eye,..."

Poppies look their best at this time of year thanks to the long evenings

For the Fallen
BY LAURENCE BINYON

With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children,
England mourns for her dead across the sea.
Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit,
Fallen in the cause of the free.

Solemn the drums thrill; Death august and royal
Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres,
There is music in the midst of desolation
And a glory that shines upon our tears.

They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted;
They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years contemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

They mingle not with their laughing comrades again;
They sit no more at familiar tables of home;
They have no lot in our labour of the day-time;
They sleep beyond England's foam.

But where our desires are and our hopes profound,
Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight,
To the innermost heart of their own land they are known
As the stars are known to the Night;

As the stars that shall be bright when we are dust,
Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain;
As the stars that are starry in the time of our darkness,
To the end, to the end, they remain.

Laurence Binyon wrote one of the best known and most frequently recited verses of the First World War.
Across the world, and particularly the Commonwealth, the central stanza of his poem For the Fallen is regularly used to proclaim and affirm the resolve of nations and communities neither to forget nor overlook the effort and sacrifice of the First World War generation, as well as their successors in later wars and conflicts.

"My thought is that if you do not do something, you do not have a prayer of being elected."

https://shareblue.com/megan-mcguire-santa-fe-high-school-shooting/

Texas shooting survivor:
Lawmakers must act on guns or lose their jobs

Lawmakers who think they can just offer “thoughts and prayers” and do nothing else after the latest school shooting ought to think again.
And 17-year-old Megan McGuire was quite clear about what their futures hold if they refuse to do so.

My thought is that if you do not do something, you do not have a prayer of being elected,” she declared.

McGuire is a junior at Santa Fe High School in Texas, where another student killed 10 people in a shooting rampage on May 18. It was the 22nd school shooting thus far this year.

Students like McGuire are fed up with their lives and safety being disregarded by right-wing politicians who are enamored with the NRA.

They know that those lawmakers don’t deserve to hold onto their seats if they put the radical gun group over vulnerable young Americans.
And they know exactly who can and will hold these derelict politicians accountable.
“My generation will see to that,” McGuire warned.

As Parkland survivor Alex Wind said, politicians who help push the NRA’s agenda have “chosen death.” But as for the students: “We choose life!”

And as McGuire and others have made clear, that choice will be made manifest at the ballot box this November.
