Want to Defend Democracy? Start with your public library.

It’s not surprising, then, that in a time such as this, people are turning to their local library for information. Pew Research Center recently found that 87 percent of millennials say the library “helps them find information that is trustworthy and reliable.” Seventy-four percent of baby boomers say the same.

It’s also not surprising that the Trump administration doesn’t seem to like libraries. Earlier this year, the administration moved to cut funding for the Institute of Museum and Library Services. In late August, the Senate, rebuffing the administration, approved a funding increase for the institute. As Sue Halpern, a scholar in residence at Middlebury College, explained in the Nation, the institute has been “crucial for sustaining libraries, especially those in struggling urban neighborhoods and rural areas.”

These billboards made me boiling mad!

I was out doing errands this afternoon and within about a 2-mile length of road, I saw three billboards with this message:

AMERICAN STEEL = AMERICAN JOBS

THANK YOU PRESIDENT TRUMP

Global warming enables first container ship to do this

Maritime history was made this month with the passage of the first commercial container ship through the Northern Sea Route of the Arctic Ocean, a route made possible by the melting of Arctic ice.

The Venta Maersk, a new ship loaded with Russian fish and South Korean electronics, left Vladivostok, Russia, at the beginning of September and is expected to arrive in Bremerhaven, Germany, next week, after successfully navigating ice-plagued seas from the Bering Straits north.

The waters at the top of the world have warmed rapidly over the last four decades, at nearly twice the rate of warming in the rest of the world, according to the Arctic Council, an international group that studies the region. The United Nations' panel on climate change says the dramatic warming is unprecedented in human history.

********I can't help but think that no wonder the oil companies aren't much concerned with their industry contributing to global warming after reading this.

Be the first one on your block to try this new condiment

Fries are about to get a new friend! Heinz Mayochup sauce, the blend of mayonnaise and ketchup that divided the internet back in April 2018 when it was first announced, is officially making its U.S. debut later this month.

Personally, I say YUCK. What to other DUers think?

I hope I am proven wrong on this

But I'm not very optimistic about Dr. Ford's testimony, no matter how credible and truthful, changing any Stone Age minds in the GOP Congress. Remember Clarence Thomas and Anita Hill.

I really, really, hope I am proven wrong.

What could possibly go wrong with this idea!

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is testing a new system next week that allows President Trump to send messages directly to U.S. cellphones.

All major wireless firms and more than 100 mobile carriers are participating in the new Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) program that allows for presidential alerts, FEMA wrote in a Thursday statement.
