Israel hospitals instructed not to treat captured Hamas who have piled up in the public hospital sy

https://m.jpost.com/breaking-news/article-767787

Health Minister Moshe Arbel issued a directive to the public health system in Israel to refuse to treat captured terrorists on Wednesday afternoon.

"Since the beginning of the fighting, the issue of treating the damned and despicable Hamas terrorists within the public hospitals has piled up a tremendous difficulty on the health system," wrote Arbel.

"In these difficult times, the health system should focus fully on the treatment of the victims of the criminal massacre, the IDF soldiers and preparedness for the next," added the health minister. "The task of securing and treating the cursed and despicable terrorists within the public health system significantly harms these efforts and therefore, under my guidance, the public health system will not treat them."

"The handling of the matter should be entrusted to the IDF or the Shin Bet, and of course the Health Ministry is ready and willing to assist these bodies, as needed."

Arbel called on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to instruct the relevant bodies to act accordingly.

Santos Indicted for Fake-Donor Scheme Exposed by Mother Jones

On Tuesday evening, federal prosecutors charged already-indicted and disgraced Rep. George Santos (R-N.Y.) with several new crimes, including campaign finance violations for a fake-donor scheme exposed by Mother Jones earlier this year. These new counts added to the preexisting indictment also include wire fraud and identity theft. The feds claim that Santos used his donors’ credit cards to make unauthorized transactions that ended up transferring funds to his own campaign, the campaigns of other candidates, and his own bank account.

------

Earlier this year, Mother Jones broke the news that Santos had reported receiving what appeared to be fake donations during his 2020 and 2022 congressional campaigns—a straightforward violation of federal campaign finance laws. His former treasurer, Nancy Marks, confirmed Mother Jones’ reporting by pleading guilty last week to having helped Santos pull off this scam in order to falsely inflate his campaign’s fundraising totals. Marks is facing a recommended prison sentence of up to four years. In May, Santos pleaded not guilty to 13 other charges.

____

When we examined Santos’ campaign finances from his first run for office in 2020, we found that many of his top-dollar donors did not seem to exist. For example, Victoria and Jonathan Regor were each recorded on his campaign’s filings with the Federal Election Commission as having donated the legal maximum of $2,800 in the general election. Public records, though, showed nobody named Victoria Regor or Jonathan Regor anywhere in the United States, and the New Jersey address listed for them did not exist.

_____

In another case, a retiree named Stephen Berger was listed as living on Brandt Road in Brawley, California. Public records showed that William Brandt was the real resident of that address. A spokesperson for Brandt told us that Brandt had never donated to Santos, that no one named Stephen Berger had ever lived at the address, and that he did not know anyone by that name.

_____

In other cases, the apparent fraud was comically sloppy. One of the major donors listed at a fake address was Rafael da Silva. That happened to be the name of a Brazilian soccer player who had played near where Santos once lived in the Rio de Janeiro area. Da Silva’s nonexistent address was 15 West 57th Street—another curious coincidence. Sam Miele, Santos’ fundraiser at the time, appeared to have named his company, the One57 Group, after the luxury tower at 157 West 57th Street. (In August, Miele was indicted for impersonating a top aide to Rep. Kevin McCarthy, the California Republican, while soliciting donations.)

Foreign aircrews refuse to fly to Israel as hundreds of Israelis stranded abroad

While some foreign airlines canceled their flights to and from Israel following the outbreak of war in Gaza, some aircrews refuse to fly to Israel – even while working for Israeli airlines.

Arkia Airlines rescue flight 221 from Athens to Israel, which was supposed to take off at 09:40, was delayed for hours after a foreign crew from Bulgaria, including the pilot and flight attendants that Arkia hired to operate the plane, refused to fly to Israel.

Ofir Fahima, who is currently in Athens along with many other Israelis who planned to come to Israel due to the war with Gaza, told Walla! Tourism that he and his wife arrived in Athens via Istanbul to return to Israel following the absence of his wife's father for two days following the war. "All the time, the flight was being postponed," said Fahima, "and a special flight crew arrived from Israel, then we got to the plane and the foreign crew was not ready to fly, and all the crew members got off, took their luggage, and left. The plane is empty and we are stuck on the bus near the plane," Fahima explained.

According to Fahima, the passengers are begging Arkia to fly an Israeli crew and to make the rescue flight from Athens go as planned.

Public school principal questioned student's religious beliefs, punished her for dancing

Louisiana public school principal apologizes after punishing student for dancing at a party
A Louisiana public school principal has apologized and requested leave for punishing a student and questioning her religious beliefs after he saw a video of her dancing at an off-campus party

WALKER, La. -- A Louisiana public school principal has apologized and requested leave for punishing a student and questioning her religious beliefs after he saw a video of her dancing at an off-campus party.

The 17-year-old student government president and scholarship candidate was videotaped dancing at an off-campus party following Walker High School's Sept. 30 Homecoming festivities. A hired DJ took the video and posted it on social media. Three days later, Jason St. Pierre, principal of the public high school near the state capital of Baton Rouge, told the student she would be removed from her position with the student government association and that he would no longer recommend her for college scholarships.

At a meeting in his office with the assistant principal, St. Pierre told the student she wasn’t “living in the Lord’s way,” her mother said, according to The Advocate. He printed out Bible verses with highlighted sections and “questioned who her friends were and if they followed the Lord," the news outlet reported.

In a statement published Sunday on the Livingston Parish Public Schools district Facebook page, St. Pierre reversed course. Citing the significant public attention the episode had received and more time to consider his decision, the principal apologized to the student's family and undid his previous disciplinary plans. He also addressed his invocation of religion.

“Finally, during my conversation with (the student) regarding the dance party, the subject of religious beliefs was broached by (the student) and myself," St. Pierre wrote. "While that conversation was meant with the best intentions, I do understand it is not my responsibility to determine what students’ or others’ religious beliefs may be – that should be the responsibility of the individual.”

Turning to Street Vending, New Migrants Find a Competitive World

Turning to Street Vending, New Migrants Find a Competitive World
Newly arrived migrants are hawking candy, fruit and beverages in New York City, often with young children in tow. Turf battles with more established vendors are becoming common.

https://www.nytimes.com/2023/10/04/nyregion/nyc-migrants-street-vendors.html

Standing on a subway platform deep below Times Square, Natalí Tualombo, a newly arrived migrant from Ecuador, sold water bottles and sodas from a cooler, her 4-year-old son sitting at her feet.

___

She frequently dodges not only the police, but also other vendors inside the 42nd Street station. She moved to this platform after a longtime fruit seller on a nearby platform accused her of encroaching on pre-existing turf, threatened to call the police to take her son away and began selling water bottles to compete directly with her, Ms. Tualombo said.

Ms. Tualombo, 23, is scared to keep vending but has limited options. Her husband often comes home empty-handed after searching for day laborer jobs. She brings an apple for her son to eat while she works, sometimes until 10 p.m., to try and make at least $60 for the day.

“I can’t get ahead,” Ms. Tualombo said in Spanish as a subway train screeched by every few minutes. “I look for work, I can’t find any. That’s why I come and suffer here with my son.”

In many corners of New York, the most visible sign of the city’s migrant crisis is on the streets and in the subways, where a surge of newcomers has been hustling to make a living. Faced with a daunting process to obtain formal work authorization, many migrants have joined the competitive world of street vending — hawking candy, fruit and beverages, often with young children in tow.

Israelis feel abandoned by trusted army after terror assault

‘No one to talk to’: Israelis feel abandoned by trusted army after terror assault
Jonathan Silver says he has received no information on 6 missing relatives, three whom may be held captive in Gaza; he’s especially concerned for aunt, who suffers from Parkinson’s

https://www.timesofisrael.com/no-one-to-talk-to-israelis-feel-abandoned-by-trusted-army-after-terror-assault/

It was, they thought, an ironclad social contract. Israeli citizens would serve in the military and live along enemy borders. In exchange, the army would defend them.

That contract was shattered Saturday when hundreds of Hamas terrorists breached Israel’s defenses from the Gaza Strip, pouring in by air, land, and sea on a murderous rampage that would leave hundreds dead.

The infiltration caught Israel’s storied high-tech army completely unaware and stunned a country that prides itself on military prowess.

Further shocking Israelis was how long it took the military to respond. As thousands in southern Israel suddenly found themselves besieged, their cries for help went unanswered for hours. Holed up inside homes and safe rooms as terrorists sprayed bullets, torched homes, and hurled grenades, they turned in desperation to social media, to journalists, and to friends, beseeching the army to save them.

The weekend attacks and the military’s response brought an unsettling new sense of vulnerability and abandonment.

Why Puerto Rico Is Adding 'USA' to Its Driver's Licenses

Why Puerto Rico Is Adding ‘USA’ to Its Driver’s Licenses
Puerto Ricans have long been wrongly told that their driver’s licenses are not proof that they are American but some question whether the change will resolve much.

Humberto Marchand turned on his phone camera and began recording inside the airport in May because he could not believe what he was hearing.

The subsequent video was posted on social media and showed an employee of Hertz, the rental car chain, refusing to give Mr. Marchand his prepaid reserved car because he had presented a driver’s license issued from Puerto Rico, where he is from. The employee did not realize that this meant he was American and ignored Mr. Marchand’s pleas as he repeated, “It is a valid ID.”

Eileen Vélez Vega, Puerto Rico’s secretary of transportation and public works, felt increasingly frustrated as she watched that video in the spring, which reignited concerns over how Puerto Ricans are treated in the United States and the way their colonial past still vexes the island.

“I was shocked about how much lack of education, lack of knowledge was out there,” Ms. Vélez Vega said in an interview, noting that people born in Puerto Rico, a commonwealth of the United States, have the same birthright American citizenship as people born in the 50 states. “I couldn’t believe what was happening.”

Watch: Trump gleefully dances off New Hampshire stage after addressing Israel attack

https://www.rawstory.com/donald-trump-dances-israel/

Former President Donald Trump appeared to be in a good mood on Monday, dancing his way across a New Hampshire stage before addressing the crowd about the terror attacks that struck Israel.

During a speech in Wolfeboro, NH, Trump acknowledged the deaths of hundreds of Israelis.

"When I was your President, we had peace through strength," Trump said, "now we have weakness, conflict, and chaos. The atrocities we are witnessing in Israel would never have happened."

But he didn't let the bad news get him down.

The former president could be seen dancing as he exited the stage.
