Tuberville wont bend on military blockade amid Israel crisis
After Hamas attacked Israel, Senate Democrats said it was past time for several top-level military nominees to be approved.
Sen. Tommy Tuberville is not relenting from his monthslong blockade of military nominations over the Biden administrations abortion policy even in the face of one of Americas closest allies going to war.
___
Sen. Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii) told POLITICO Saturday that America needs a Senate-confirmed chief of naval operations amid the chaos in Israel. Tuberville spokesperson Steven Stafford responded Sunday: Sen. Schatz should do what Coach did and file a cloture petition, referring to the senator, a former football coach.
Typically, military promotions are processed en masse, but individual senators have the leverage to require roll call votes. The Senate would have time for little else if it confirmed them all individually, so Tubervilles blanket objection has effectively stalled the typically uncontroversial promotions process.
As a result, over 300 nominees are in limbo, including two picks for the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and top officers slated to command U.S. forces in the Middle East.
The severity of the crisis in Israel underscores the foolishness of Senator Tubervilles blockade, Senate Armed Services Chair Jack Reed said in a statement Sunday. The United States needs seamless military leadership in place to handle dangerous situations like this and Senator Tuberville is denying it.

How Hamas prepared: practiced in mock Israeli settlement, recruits didn't know why they drilled
In one of the most striking elements of their preparations, Hamas constructed a mock Israeli settlement in Gaza where they practiced a military landing and trained to storm it, the source close to Hamas said, adding they even made videos of the manoeuvres.
"Israel surely saw them but they were convinced that Hamas wasn't keen on getting into a confrontation," the source said.
Meanwhile, Hamas sought to convince Israel it cared more about ensuring that workers in Gaza, a narrow strip of land with more than two million residents, had access to jobs across the border and had no interest in starting a new war.
"Hamas was able to build a whole image that it was not ready for a military adventure against Israel," the source said.
______
As part of its subterfuge in the past two years, Hamas refrained from military operations against Israel, even as another Gaza-based Islamist armed group known as Islamic Jihad launched a series of its own assaults or rocket attacks.
The restraint shown by Hamas drew public criticism from some supporters, again aimed at building an impression that Hamas had economic concerns not a new war on its mind, the source said.
In the West Bank, controlled by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and his Fatah group, there were those who mocked Hamas for going quiet. In one Fatah statement published in June 2022, the group accused Hamas leaders of fleeing to Arab capitals to live in "luxurious hotels and villas" leaving their people to poverty in Gaza.
_______
Many Hamas leaders were unaware of the plans and, while training, the 1,000 fighters deployed in the assault had no inkling of the exact purpose of the exercises, the source added.

A bigoted maniac moved to Florida and became one of it's most prolific book banners: Bruce Friedma
Mr. Friedmans erratic and inconsistent challenges make it impossible for us to predict and devise a solution, the school districts chief academic officer, Roger Dailey, told the board during its Sept. 26 workshop. I dont know that there is a way to satisfy him.
_____
Hes been incredibly successful, said Tasslyn Magnusson, who researches school book bans for the literary free-speech group PEN America and considers Friedman one of the biggest players in a movement she sees as attacking public education. Hes by far the best example of how this is not about the books, but this is about destroying the system.
_____
Yet Friedman, who is involved in both groups, stands out for the sheer volume and intensity of his challenges; he is responsible for more than a third of all challenges in Florida, and for 94% of the challenges in his district, which has acceded to hundreds of his requests to pull books and has removed more books than any other in the state as a result. He insists that his efforts are on behalf of children like his own, whom he pulled from public school when they lived back in New York out of concerns about what the child was learning there.
____
Friedman said the standards caused his now-stepson to experience considerable harm, declining to offer specifics. ........... When he saw Fishbein talking about No Left Turn on Tucker Carlsons Fox News show following the 2020 racial justice protests, he knew he had found his new cause.
___
When Friedman and his family moved to Florida, he made the decision to put his son now in high school back in public school, believing that his evangelical education had given him a very good moral base that would insulate him from danger. But he forbade his stepson from ever using the school library and threw himself into monitoring the librarys contents.
There were so many parents out there, Friedman reasoned, who didnt have time to thoroughly monitor their childrens media consumption like he did. Even if most of those parents might be fine with their kid reading the occasional racy book passage, some might not be.
Its not the kids that have a wicked dark sense of humor like I was, he said, describing the child he pictures in his head when he files his challenges. Its for the sheltered little people who have parents that are so concerned with their souls that they dont want them harmed.
___
Friedmans challenge to the book, which he shared with JTA, doesnt mention Kraus quest to protect childrens books from Nazis. Instead, he quotes from sections describing nude, emaciated Auschwitz prisoners and Jewish corpses, passages which he believes are inappropriate for all age levels. A message to the board further articulating his objections suggests that his main issue with the book is that it mentions the Holocaust at all.
Unsupervised forays into the horrors of the Holocaust can be traumatizing for children, he writes. They are almost certain to have some impact on a child. I wouldnt necessarily expect this impact to be positive. Elsewhere he repeats his familiar objections: PROTECT CHILDREN, he writes in all caps. DAMAGED SOULS.

complex synchronized orchestration..how Hamas pulled it off
The IDF was used to rocket fire without border riots or border riots without rocket fire.
It was used for one small group of sea commandos trying to invade Zikim beach or one or two drones or other flying contraptions being sent over the border which could be easily isolated and handled.
Instead, Hamas launched 2,000 rockets as a cover.
At the same time that it launched rockets diverting IDF attention, it also launched an entire fleet of motorized hang-gliders (something which has barely ever been discussed by the IDF) which manually dropped bombs on Israeli lookout positions. These motorized hang gliders were a brilliant tactical use of homemade retro technology with a tiny "footprint" (in terms of being able to detect them in advance) customized to pinpoint holes in the IDF's highly advanced technological apparatus.
With the lookout positions taken out, immediately after Hamas sent its forces into different crossing locations.
As the IDF started to notice that its crossing locations were under attack along with the rocket fire, its attention was diverted from the 20 or so entry points, which already lacked lookout positions, where Hamas was ready with additional large volumes of soldiers.
At the same time, Hamas did not come into Israel on land with dozens, but with hundreds of soldiers, a volume the IDF never expected.
Also, at the same time, Hamas did not penetrate Israel by sea with one group of Hamas naval commandos, but with many groups, something the navy was not ready for.
____
All of this happened virtually simultaneously, but in a specific order to allow each next step to move forward smoothly and further confuse and overwhelm Israeli decision-makers about where and what was going on.
____

RNC chair Ronna McDaniel: Israel war a 'great opportunity' for GOP candidates

National Committee Ronna McDaniel argued the Hamas attacks on Israel and subsequent war is a good thing for Republican candidates for president.
Republican National Committee Ronna McDaniel argued the Hamas attacks on Israel and subsequent war is a good thing for Republican candidates for president.
I think this is a great opportunity for our candidates to contrast where Republicans have stood with Israel time and time again and Joe Biden has been weak, McDaniel said on Fox News on Saturday.
McDaniels political analysis came as Hamas terrorist forces attacked civilians, killing seniors at a bus stop and abducting and killing an apparent German citizen in Israel for a music festival.

Some of Israel images appear to be edited/ manipulated. Elon Musk eliminated content moderation team
On X, formerly known as Twitter, a violent video claiming to show the kidnapping of Israeli soldiers had been viewed hundreds of thousands of times on Saturday morning. The New York Times found hundreds of X accounts sharing images of dead bodies, claiming to be Israeli civilians killed in the last 24 hours of fighting. Some of the images viewed by the Times appeared to be manipulated and edited.
Underneath some of the videos and images posted on X, people warned that they could be spread as part of a campaign to stoke fear among Israelis. Some of the accounts claimed to be working on behalf of Hamas.
On WhatsApp, Israelis warned each other not to look at X, which often auto-plays videos without warning.
Dont look, you might see someone you know, wrote one person on a WhatsApp group dedicated to a neighborhood of South Tel Aviv.
There is a long history of misinformation being shared among Israeli and Palestinian groups, with false claims and conspiracies spiking during moments of heightened violence in the region.
Since Elon Musk took ownership of the platform one year ago, he has eliminated many of the content moderation teams that once removed violent imagery from the platform.
