As lava threatens to take their homes and escape routes are becoming blocked, tensions are rising in the residential areas near Kilauea volcano on Hawaii's Big Island.

An argument between neighbors John Hubbard, 61, and Ethan Edwards, 32, escalated on Tuesday when Hubbard pulled out a gun.

Edwards lived in the area and had come back to check the damage on his home, which had been consumed by lava.

A video of the altercation, which cuts in about halfway through the argument, shows Edwards lunge towards the gun and Hubbard push him back. When Edwards lunges a second time, Hubbard fires a warning shot just above his head.

As Edwards screams: 'You've gotta be kidding, I live here', Hubbard yells at him to: 'Get the f*** out of here'.

California will let Elon Musk sell 20,000 personal flamethrowers

https://www.sfgate.com/business/article/Elon-Musk-can-sell-flamethrowers-California-12955493.php?t=a18473461a

In the coming weeks, some 20,000 people could be walking around with the devices, which resemble toy guns but are capable of emitting flames at least 2 feet long. In California, there will be little to regulate them because lawmakers quietly quashed a bill to rein in recreational fire spitting.

Let’s back up. In December, one of Musk’s companies began selling hats to raise money for its vision of drilling tunnels under urban areas to beat gridlock. Fired up by a positive public response, Musk promised on Twitter that if his Boring Company sold 50,000 hats, it would also begin selling “the Boring Company flamethrower.”

He explained the logic of this merchandising leap in a later tweet: “I know it’s a little off-brand, but kids love it.”

Supreme court ruling weakening labor laws has immediate impact for Lowe's Managers

Lowe’s Is Making Managers Sign Arbitration Agreements If They Want Their Bonuses
We’re going to see a whole lot more of these “voluntary” agreements after last week’s Supreme Court ruling.

Lowe’s has a message for its store managers: Sign this or else.

Salaried managers and assistant managers at the big-box home improvement retailer are being required to enter binding arbitration agreements under the threat of losing their valuable bonuses, according to a copy of the contract obtained by HuffPost.

By signing the contract, managers agree they won’t take Lowe’s to court with any claims or join in class-action lawsuits against the company. Instead, any grievance they have must be taken individually and in private to an arbitrator ― an arrangement that could significantly cut back workers’ legal claims of unpaid work.

The contract, dated March of this year, makes clear that declining to sign could come at a severe cost. “Your participation in the 2018 Manager Bonus Program” hinges on the signature, as well as “your continued employment at Lowe’s,” it reads.

Trump's new midterm strategy: Outrage

Trump’s new midterm strategy: Outrage
The president's recent tweets claiming unfair bias are part of an emerging strategy to stir up enthusiasm among supporters.

President Donald Trump spreads misinformation. A lot of it. Really, a lot.

But every once in a while he will come out guns blazing in defense of the truth, demanding corrections and consequences for spreading falsehoods told by others, and using incorrect news reports to undercut the media as a whole.

He executed the well-practiced maneuver once again on Tuesday, seizing on images of detained migrant children in bare-bones holding areas that had been spread on Twitter to attack his immigration policies but turned out to have been taken in 2014 while President Barack Obama was still in office.

“Democrats mistakenly tweet 2014 pictures from Obama’s term showing children from the Border in steel cages,” Trump wrote on Twitter on Tuesday morning. “They thought it was recent pictures in order to make us look bad, but backfires. Dems must agree to Wall and new Border Protection for good of country...Bipartisan Bill!”

Then, hours later, came the broader indictment of the press: “The Fake Mainstream Media has, from the time I announced I was running for President, run the most highly sophisticated & dishonest Disinformation Campaign in the history of politics. No matter how well WE do, they find fault. But the forgotten men & women WON, I’m President!”

In recent months Trump has called for the firing of a Washington Post reporter over an inaccurate tweet, slammed the media for mischaracterizing his characterization of some immigrants as “animals” and called for ABC to fire Brian Ross over an incorrect report concerning the Russia investigation.

This kind of rhetoric is emerging as a central element of his 2018 and 2020 campaign strategies. Republican strategists, including officials behind Trump’s reelection effort, are operating under the premise that Democrats will be plenty energized for the midterms and 2020 elections — and they largely see their job as helping the GOP match, or exceed, that energy.

rightwing commentators were engaged in false equivalences & 'mental gymnastics' about Rosannes tweet

Some conservatives acknowledged that Roseanne’s tweets were indefensible. Tomi Lahren, a high-profile commentator who has previously compared the Black Lives Matter movement to the KKK, tweeted that: “What Roseanne said was wrong. I’m sure she knows that. She made a mistake. I don’t know why fellow conservatives are playing mental gymnastics trying to justify it. Come on. Wrong is wrong.”

But many vocal rightwing personalities were quick to rush to Roseanne’s defense, often employing, as Lahren acknowledged, a variety of mental gymnastics to argue that the comedian’s tweets weren’t racist.

Singer Ted Nugent, said: “So Roseanne referencing a movie title is racist. Lying dishonest soulless freaks from Planet of the Apes.”

-----

Nugent’s denial of the racist connotations of comparing an African American woman to an ape was common among avowed Trump supporters. Bill Mitchell, one of Trump’s most prolific supporters on social media, tweeted that, in the Planet of the Apes, the apes were superior and so comparing Jarrett to an ape was not racist. Mitchell deleted the tweet shortly after posting it.

The assertion that Roseanne’s tweets were not racist were also accompanied by cries of political correctness gone mad. Mark Dice, a rightwing conspiracy theorist with 317,000 Twitter followers snarked: “Time to ban monkey bars from all school playgrounds, because they’re ‘racist’ too, I guess. RE: Roseanne fired by ABC.”

During a Fox News panel, Noelle Nikpour, a Republican strategist, said the comedian was fired because “we live in a politically correct world right now”. And Alex Jones, who is currently being sued for spreading a conspiracy theory that Sandy Hook was a hoax, railed against the “THOUGHT POLICE.”

US returns $41,000 seized from Texas nurse who planned to open clinic

US returns $41,000 seized from Texas nurse who planned to open clinic
Anthonia Nwaorie will still sue after US customs seized money she was carrying en route to Nigeria to open a medical facility

A Texas nurse who had $41,000 seized by US customs last autumn as she tried to travel to Nigeria to start a medical clinic has the money back but plans to continue her lawsuit against the government.

After her case attracted widespread media attention, US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) mailed Anthonia Nwaorie a cheque that she received last Friday.

“I’m glad to have my money back, but this isn’t over,” she said in a statement. “I want to make sure nobody else has to go through what I’ve been through.”

In an episode that shone a light on how law enforcement agencies conduct asset forfeiture, Nwaorie was boarding a plane in Houston last October when she was stopped by officials.

CBP confiscated the $41,377 she was carrying, the bulk of which she had saved up in order to open a clinic for women and children in Imo state, where she grew up before moving to the US in 1982.

The 59-year-old said she was unaware of the requirement to declare currency over $10,000 when leaving the US as well as upon arrival. Though Nwaorie was not charged with a crime, CBP sent her a letter in April saying that it would return the money on the condition that she sign a “hold harmless” agreement promising that she would never take legal action against the government over the episode

Cal basketball coach says Southwest asked for proof biracial son was hers

Cal women's basketball head coach Lindsay Gottlieb says she was asked to "prove" her son belonged to her before boarding a flight to Oakland on Sunday.

Gottlieb, who is white, said a Southwest Airlines employee in Denver asked for a birth certificate and later a Facebook post to prove her 1-year-old son was hers, despite Gottlieb previously providing his passport.

According to Gottlieb, the Southwest employee reportedly said her questions stemmed from the fact that Gottlieb's son, Jordan Peter Martin, has a different last name.

"My guess is because he has a different skin color," Gottlieb said in a tweet Sunday night. Her fiancé, Patrick Martin, is black.

---

In a follow-up tweet, Gottlieb wrote that the mother next to her in line said "she's never been asked for proof" despite her son's different last name.

NASA photographer's camera melted during a SpaceX rocket launch & he's not sure whether it's insured

A 30-year veteran of NASA photography set up automated cameras around SpaceX's recent rocket launch.
One of the cameras melted to a crisp in a brush fire that was lit by the rocket's super-hot exhaust plume.
Though NASA's camera may not be insured, it did manage to protect incredible images that show its fiery death.
On May 22, NASA photographer Bill Ingalls left six cameras near a 230-foot-tall SpaceX rocket just before it blasted toward space.

Like other photographers who'd traveled to Vandenberg Air Force Base in California for the event, Ingalls positioned his camera gear at locations near the launchpad that he thought were safe. The remote cameras are designed to automatically capture stunning up-close images once the thunderous roar of the rocket is heard.

---

"I had many other cameras much closer to the pad than this and all are safe," Ingalls wrote in a Facebook post. "This was result of a small brush fire, which is not unheard of from launches, and was extinguished by fireman, albeit, after my cam was baked."

Ingalls says he lost a Canon EOS 5Ds camera body, a Canon 24-105mm lens, and a tripod owned by NASA. His setup also included a microphone and remote-triggering box.
If purchased new today, such a collection of gear might cost about $5,000.

"I could not answer if this NASA gear is insured by NASA," Ingalls told Business Insider in an email. "We will replace these units."
