Nearly Half of All Pregnancies Worldwide are Unintended and 60% of those end in abortion

Nearly Half of All Pregnancies Worldwide are Unintended and 60% of those end in abortion

UNFPA, the United Nations sexual and reproductive health agency, is sounding the alarm on a human rights crisis that has ramifications for women, societies, and the world. Its 2022 State of World Population report, Seeing the Unseen: The case for action in the neglected crisis of unintended pregnancy, estimates that nearly half of all pregnancies worldwide are unintended — totaling 121 million unintended pregnancies each year. The report builds on new data from the Guttmacher Institute and the World Health Organization (WHO) that outlines the first-ever estimates of unintended pregnancy and abortion at the country level, highlighting major disparities across 150 countries in access to quality sexual and reproductive health care.

---------------

Myriad factors, rooted in gender inequality, are stripping people of their fundamental decision-making power over their bodies. This includes a lack of quality sexual and reproductive health care and information, including preferred methods of contraception, as well as harmful societal norms or stigma around reproduction and bodily autonomy, intimate partner or sexual violence or coercion, and harmful laws and policies. These factors are compounded for people who are already marginalized due to identifiers such as age, marital status, rural or urban dwelling, gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity, income and education level, or ability.

Unsurprisingly, then, countries with higher rates of gender inequality had higher rates of unintended pregnancy, with just 57% of women able to make their own decisions over their sexual and reproductive health and rights. In a world where nearly 1 in 3 young women are giving birth before the age of 20, can a person imagine a life where pregnancy is a choice, not a given? Do their reproductive intentions even matter?

-------------

The true scope of the impacts of unintended pregnancy are wide-ranging and impossible to quantify. What we can attempt to measure, however, is alarming: More than 60 percent of unintended pregnancies end in abortion, and nearly half of those abortions are unsafe, and directly lead to five to 13 percent of all maternal deaths worldwide — what the report calls a public health emergency.

cop w/ shady past, goes to a secluded spot for sexy time on the job. worker on cell tower filmed it

In uniform?
On the job?

note... internet sleuths identified the town by the shrubbery, cemetery.

A police officer in Georgia has resigned from the force after he was caught on video engaging in a sexual act near a cemetery while on the job, authorities said.

The lawman, identified as Millen Police Officer Larry “Ben” Thompson, was seen engaged in sexual activity with a woman as his police car was parked in an open field near a cemetery, news station WRDW reported.

The footage, which was posted by TikTok user Dillon Cole, was captured from a nearby tower in Millen, a small town of about 2,800 people about an hour south of Augusta.

“Police caught on cam!!!” the user wrote along with the hashtags #towerclimbers #dirtydeeds and #police.

Someone on a telecommunications tower filmed the incident and uploaded the video to TikTok on March 19 with the caption "Police caught on cam!!!" and the hashtags #towerclimbers #dirtydeeds and #police. The video has been viewed nearly 11 million times.

Thompson had previous incidents while serving on the Millen police force. WRDW investigated Thompson's past and reported that he had shot another officer, was involved in a fatal car crash and received a two-day suspension after a woman said he was harassing her.

What We Know About the Women Who Vote for Republicans and the Men Who Do Not

(long complicated academic article)... some highlights

The Deckman-Cassese study is part of a large body of work that seeks to answer a basic question: Who are the men who align with the Democratic Party and who are the women who identify as Republicans?

-------

A 2011 paper by I-Ching Lee of the National Taiwan University and Felicia Pratto and Blair T. Johnson of the University of Connecticut — “Intergroup Consensus/Disagreement in Support of Group-Based Hierarchy: An Examination of Socio-Structural and Psycho-Cultural Factors” — makes the case that

in societies in which unequal groups are segregated into separate roles or living spaces, they may not compare their situations to those of other groups and may be relatively satisfied. In such cases, we would expect dominants and subordinates to be more similar in their attitude toward group-based hierarchy.

On the other hand, they continued:

in societies in which people purport to value equality, subordinates may come to expect and feel entitled to equality. The evidence and signs they observe of inequality would then mean that reality is falling short of their ideal standards. This condition may lead them to reassert their opposition to group-based hierarchy and to differentiate from dominants.

It may be, then, that the association of the Democratic Party with values linked more closely to women than men is a factor in the party’s loss of support among Hispanic and Black men. As my colleague Charles Blow wrote in “Democrats Continue to Struggle With Men of Color” in September: “For one thing, never underestimate the communion among men, regardless of race. Men have privileges in society, and some are drawn to policies that elevate their privileges.”

YIKES! LA Mayor Garcetti's Indian Ambassadorship in doubt. He could end up without either job

he chose not to run for reelection as major

https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2022-03-30/garcetti-india-ambassador-nomination-growing-scrutiny-senators

----

A growing number of senators, including some Democrats, have begun talking publicly about the allegations this week, creating doubts about a nominee who once appeared headed for easy confirmation. The mayor would need the support of all 50 Democrats to win confirmation without any Republican votes.

Democratic Sen. Mark Kelly of Arizona signaled Wednesday that he is taking a closer look at Garcetti’s nomination. “Senator Kelly has concerns about this nomination based on the serious allegations raised by whistleblowers and is continuing to evaluate it,” a Kelly spokesperson told The Times. The news was first reported by the Arizona Republic.

Garcetti confirmation vote likely delayed another month due to expanded GOP probe

Jacobs raised millions of dollars in support of Garcetti’s 2013 mayoral campaign and was a top City Hall deputy before stepping down in 2016. The focus of a city lawsuit by a LAPD officer who accused him of sexual harassment, Jacobs continued to work as a political consultant for Garcetti and helped run two nonprofits associated with the mayor. He stepped away from those roles after more men came forward to accuse him of misconduct.

Jacobs has denied harassing anyone, but conceded that he may have hugged LAPD Officer Matthew Garza, who sued the city, and told sexual jokes in front of the mayor’s security detail.

41 year old man was seen on video forcing himself into her car and driving away from Walmart. He's been under arrest for a few days. sad but expected end to this story

Body found of Nevada woman kidnapped from Walmart parking lot
The remains of Naomi Irion, 18, were found in a remote gravesite, authorities said.

A body discovered in a remote gravesite in Nevada was identified Wednesday as a woman who vanished from a Walmart parking lot earlier this month, authorities said.

The sheriff’s offices in Churchill and Lyon counties said in a joint statement that the body of Naomi Irion, 18, was found after a tip led investigators to the area east of Reno.

Her body was found Tuesday, and the Washoe County Medical Examiner confirmed her identity Wednesday, the statement said.

----------

Earlier Wednesday, Troy Driver, 41, appeared at a bail hearing on charges of first-degree kidnapping in Irion’s disappearance.

In a criminal complaint, prosecutors alleged that Driver abducted Irion on March 15 "with the purpose of committing sexual assault and/or for the purpose of killing her," NBC affiliate KRNV reported.
