Trump removes independent watchdog for coronavirus funds, upending oversight panel

Source: Politico

President Donald Trump has upended the panel of federal watchdogs overseeing his implementation of the $2 trillion coronavirus law, tapping a replacement for the Pentagon official who was supposed to lead the effort.

A panel of inspectors general had named Glenn Fine — the acting Pentagon watchdog — to lead the group charged with monitoring the coronavirus relief effort. But Trump on Monday removed Fine from his post, instead naming an EPA inspector general to serve as the temporary Pentagon watchdog.

That decision effectively removed Fine from his role overseeing the coronavirus relief effort, since the new law permits only current inspectors general to fill the position.

“Mr. Fine is no longer on the Pandemic Response Accountability Committee,” Dwrena Allen, a spokesperson for the Pentagon inspector general's office, said in a statement to POLITICO.

Pence says Trump is enjoying church services online

kudos to Pence for telling people not to go to church, but had to laugh at this:

Pence said he, his wife Karen and President Donald Trump have "been enjoying worship services online."

Netanyahu's evidence against Iran was actually a clip from a Hallmark Channel movie

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu shared with his Cabinet a video he claimed was evidence of Iran concealing coronavirus deaths by dropping bodies in garbage dumps, two Cabinet ministers tell me.

Behind the scenes: Several hours later, Netanyahu's office realized the video had nothing to do with Iran, or with the coronavirus crisis. It was a clip from “Pandemic," a 2007 Hallmark Channel mini-series.

During a conference call with Cabinet ministers on Monday, Netanyahu said he'd seen a video of Iranian soldiers loading bodies onto trucks and dropping them at garbage dumps.

According to two ministers who were on the call, Netanyahu said his national security adviser, Meir Ben-Shabbat, had shown him the video.

Many of the ministers asked to watch the video, and Netanyahu asked his national security adviser to send it to the entire Cabinet.
The video had been shared by Iranians on social media over the last week, and it was passed on to Netanyahu without any confirmation of its authenticity.

Tactic #5 in "The Art of the Deal": use your leverage

Negotiating tactic No. 5 from Donald Trump’s “The Art of the Deal” is “Use your leverage.” Over a thousand Americans are dead from COVID-19. Tens of thousands are sick. Many more will be, not just in major cities but in the countryside as under-supplied hospitals reach capacity. States and municipalities across the country are desperate for federal assistance. That’s a lot of leverage. Trump has them right where he wants them.

The Defense Production Act (DPA) exists to enable the government “to expedite and expand the supply of resources from the U.S. industrial base to support military, energy, space, and homeland security programs.” Among other authorities, the law enables the president to “ensure timely procurement of resources to save lives and property under emergency conditions.”

Our acting president refuses to use it with thousands sick and dying on his watch. He is leaving it to private industry to voluntarily produce what medical supplies they think are needed to fight the plague and then let states bid against each other for them. No national command and control. No coordination. Trump wants them to work it out on their own. It’s pandemic Thunderdome.

New Fed study finds efforts to slow pandemic don't depress the economy

Source: Marketwatch.com

The economy isn’t helped by rushing back to work in the face of a pandemic, according to a new study by Federal Reserve researchers.

At a time when the lieutenant governor of Texas has said senior citizens would be willing to sacrifice their lives for a better economy and when President Trump has fretted that the cure may be worse than the disease, a new research paper looked at the impact of the 1918 Spanish flu on the U.S. economy.

Far from hurting the economy, what are called nonpharmaceutical interventions — for example, shutting schools, establishing quarantines and restricting business hours — mitigate economic harm as well as reduce mortality, the researchers determined.

Green dots are where more measures were taken, Red dots where less were taken:
