Commerce Chief Threatened Firings at NOAA After Trump's Dorian Tweets, Sources Say

Source: NYT

WASHINGTON — The Secretary of Commerce threatened to fire top employees at the federal scientific agency responsible for weather forecasts last Friday after the agency’s Birmingham office contradicted President Trump’s claim that Hurricane Dorian might hit Alabama, according to three people familiar with the discussion.

That threat led to an unusual, unsigned statement later that Friday by the agency, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, disavowing the National Weather Service’s position that Alabama was not at risk. The reversal caused widespread anger within the agency and drew accusations from the scientific community that the National Weather Service, which is part of NOAA, had been bent to political purposes.

NOAA’s statement on Friday is now being examined by the Commerce Department’s Office of Inspector General, according to documents reviewed by The New York Times, and employees have been asked to preserve their files. NOAA is a division of the Commerce Department.

The National Weather Service “must maintain standards of scientific integrity,” the inspector general, Peggy E. Gustafson, wrote in a message to NOAA staff members in which she requested documents related to Friday’s statement. The circumstances, she wrote, “call into question the NWS’s processes, scientific independence, and ability to communicate accurate and timely weather warnings and data to the nation in times of national emergency.”

Commerce secretary threatened to fire top NOAA employees if they didn't disavow Alabama tweet

NYT: Commerce secretary threatened to fire top NOAA employees if they didn't disavow Alabama tweet

Washington(CNN): Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross threatened to fire top National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration employees if the agency didn't disavow a tweet from a regional office that contradicted President Donald Trump's false claim that Hurricane Dorian was likely to hit Alabama, according to a report by The New York Times.

According to three people cited in the Times report on Monday, Ross called acting NOAA Administrator Neil Jacobs and told him to fix the National Weather Service's contradiction of Trump's claim. When Jacobs opposed the demand, Ross told him NOAA's political staff would be fired, the Times reported.

The report also says Ross' threat to fire the employees is what caused NOAA on Friday to disavow a tweet from the NWS' Birmingham, Alabama, office that had contradicted Trump's claim.

A Commerce Department spokesperson denied the story.

"See a pattern"? Yes. Anyone who saw David Sirota, Nina Turner et al. appointed to the 2020 campaign leadership can see a pattern. Anyone who saw Susan Sarandon tapped to introduce Bernie at campaign events can see a pattern. Berners tweeting #NeverWarren see the pattern: Bernie or Bust 2.0

"Hillary Clinton is still pulling the strings": The Sirota Left goes Full Fake

Over the last week there are been a flurry of stories about Elizabeth Warren links to Hillary Clinton across the political spectrum, and a twitterverse surge to match them. Where's this coming from? Fans of #NeverHillary will not be disappointed.

Hillary Clinton is still pulling the strings

Hillary Clinton is still pulling the strings. Warren showed her loyalty and will be rewarded by establishment support. Warren is an establishment candidate, a vote for Warren is a vote for Hillary Clinton and a continuation of their corrupt practices within the Democratic Party. #NeverWarren

She's been so consistent in her support for centrist establishment candidates proving her loyalty to the Clinton machine. She has Hillbots in her campaign now, and like Obama she'll fill her administration with Clintonites, leaving Hillary pulling Warren's strings in the shadows.

What will a Warren administration look like? Instead of getting a list from Citigroup (like Obama) she'll be getting her list from Hillary Clinton herself.

Warren is Hillary 2.0.

Warren Campaign participates in RuPaul's DragCon

Elizabeth Warren Was the Only Presidential Hopeful at RuPaul's DragCon

Politics got fabulous this past weekend at the second annual RuPaul's DragCon in New York City.

Senator Elizabeth Warren, who has long been a prominent ally to the LGBTQ+ community, was the only (and possibly first) presidential hopeful with a booth at the convention of over 50,000 attendees.

(snip) Warren also had an official video message play during the convention. According to Yahoo!, RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars winner Trixie Mattel introduced the presidential hopeful on the main stage at Jacob K. Javits Convention Center.

(snip) She called attention to the "record number of trans Americans [that] were killed last year. Disproportionally trans women of color. We need to call it out and we need to fight back. Everyone should be able to go to school, to work, to get healthcare, or just walk down the street without fear of discrimination or violence. Equal means equal, period, and that’s what I’m fighting for. I’m honored to fight by your side."

Warren dismisses talk of a debate confrontation with Biden

Warren waves away talk of a debate confrontation with Biden

The Democratic debate in Houston this week has been billed as Elizabeth Warren's first chance to go head-to-head with former Vice President Joe Biden now that she has reached top-tier status in an array of national and state polls.

But her strategy, the Massachusetts senator suggested Saturday, will be to avoid criticizing the other Democrats on stage, including Biden.

“All I can do is stand up and talk about why I'm running,” Warren told ABC News’ Rachel Scott before speaking at the New Hampshire Democratic Convention on Saturday. "I'm not here to criticize any other Democrat or anyone else's campaign."

(snip) Warren dismissed the idea that being a frontrunner on stage Thursday could lead to a similar target on her back as Biden faced in the previous two debates.

“I don’t know,” Warren told Scott. “I just see this as an opportunity for all of the Democrats to get up and talk about their vision, what it would mean to them if they were president of the United States and what it would mean to America. I hope that’s what everyone else on stage is doing.”

Warren gets 2 minute standing ovation at NH Democratic Convention

Elizabeth Warren Stands Out at New Hampshire Democratic Party Convention

MANCHESTER, N.H. — Joseph R. Biden Jr.’s backers roared supportive slogans and banged on drums as they awaited his arrival outside Southern New Hampshire University Arena. Senator Bernie Sanders was welcomed by die-hard fans ready to cheer seemingly every sentence he uttered. Mayor Pete Buttigieg and Senator Cory Booker delivered one applause line after the next.

But no one was embraced at the New Hampshire Democratic Party’s state convention Saturday quite like Elizabeth Warren.

The Massachusetts senator took the stage to a standing ovation that lasted around two minutes, and the thunderous applause that frequently interrupted her speech was amplified by the inflatable noisemakers that had been distributed to the crowd. “Win with Warren!” attendees yelled.
