US Has Intel That Osama bin Laden's Son Hamza Is Dead, Officials Say

Source: NBC NY

The U.S. has obtained intelligence that the son and potential successor of al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, Hamza bin Laden, is dead, three U.S. officials told NBC News.

The officials would not provide details of where or when Hamza bin Laden died, or if the U.S. played a role in his death. It is unclear if the U.S. has confirmed his death. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Hamza bin Laden's last known public statement was released by al Qaeda's media arm in 2018. He threatened Saudi Arabia and called on the people of the Arabian peninsula to revolt.

Hamza bin Laden is believed to have been born around 1989. His father moved to Afghanistan in 1996 and declared war against the U.S. Hamza went with him and appeared in al Qaeda propaganda videos. As leader of al Qaeda, Osama oversaw operations against Western targets that culminated in the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on the Pentagon and New York's World Trade Center. U.S. Navy SEALS killed Osama bin Laden during 2011 raid on his compound in Pakistan.

A hacker gained access to 100 million Capital One credit card applications and accounts

Source: CNN

New York (CNN Business)In one of the biggest data breaches ever, a hacker gained access to more than 100 million Capital One customers' accounts and credit card applications earlier this year.

Paige Thompson is accused of breaking into a Capital One server and gaining access to 140,000 Social Security numbers, 1 million Canadian Social Insurance numbers and 80,000 bank account numbers, in addition to an undisclosed number of people's names, addresses, credit scores, credit limits, balances, and other information, according to the bank and the US Department of Justice.

A criminal complaint says Thompson tried to share the information with others online. The 33-year-old, who lives in Seattle, had previously worked as a tech company software engineer for Amazon (AMZN) Web Services, the cloud hosting company that Capital One was using, the Justice Department said. She was able to gain access by exploiting a misconfigured web application firewall, according to a court filing.

Thompson was arrested Monday in connection with the breach, the Justice Department said. Thompson's attorney could not be immediately reached for comment.

Photo editor FaceApp goes viral again, prompting security concerns

Source: NBC News

A photo editing app has introduced a few new wrinkles to the faces of celebrities — and to the ongoing discussion around personal digital security.

FaceApp, a more than 2-year-old app created by a Russia-based developer, has seen a recent spike in use due to some celebrities and influencers taking part in the "FaceApp Challenge."

The app has a host of image-altering features such as adding a smile or appearing to change a person's gender. Those taking part in the challenge are using the app to make themselves appear elderly, giving fans a preview of what their favorite athletes or celebrities would look like once they become senior citizens.

The Democratic National Committee felt the app posed enough of a risk to send an alert to its party's presidential campaigns on Wednesday, warning against using the app that was "developed by Russians," according to a source familiar with the alert who was not authorized to speak publicly. The warning was first reported by CNN.
