F.B.I. Agents Raid South Bend Housing Authority Offices

Source: New York Times

F.B.I. agents raided the offices of the Housing Authority of South Bend, Ind., on Wednesday, the second potential distraction back home for the presidential campaign of the city’s mayor, Pete Buttigieg.

No one was arrested during the raid, in which evidence collection teams visited the housing authority’s headquarters on Alonzo Watson Drive about 1 p.m. with a police officer and United States government trucks.

The agency, which runs nine low-income housing facilities in South Bend and is financed by the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development, has been beleaguered by complaints of financial mismanagement for much of the decade.

Such concerns prompted Mr. Buttigieg to replace all six commissioners on the housing authority’s board in 2015.

Another College Admission Scam. Rich parents giving up gaurdianship of children to get aid

[link:https://www.propublica.org/article/university-of-illinois-financial-aid-fafsa-parents-guardianship-children-students|]

While ProPublica Illinois uncovered this practice in north suburban Lake County, where almost four dozen such guardianships were filed in the past 18 months, similar petitions have been filed in at least five other counties and the practice may be happening throughout the country. ProPublica Illinois is still investigating.

Borst said he first became suspicious when a high school counselor from an affluent Chicago suburb called him about a year ago to ask why a particular student had been invited to an orientation program for low-income students. Borst checked the student’s financial aid application and saw she had obtained a legal guardian, making her eligible to qualify for financial aid independently.

Court Revives Manslaughter Charge in Baby's Drug-Related Death

A divided Eighth Circuit panel reinstated an involuntary manslaughter charge Friday against a South Dakota woman whose son died hours after birth and was found to have illegal drugs in his system.
Samantha Flute, a Native American, gave birth in August 2016 to a baby boy at a hospital in Sisseton, South Dakota, after testing positive for cocaine and various prescription and over-the-counter drugs.

Four hours later, the premature baby died from combined drug toxicity as a result of the drugs Flute ingested while he was still in utero, according to the findings of a forensic pathologist.

Federal prosecutors charged Flute with one count of involuntary manslaughter committed within Indian country, claiming she killed the baby by ingesting “medicines in a grossly negligent manner.” She reportedly admitted that she knew ingesting the drugs could harm her baby, but said she needed to get high.

Justice Brent Kavanaugh votes with liberal SCOTUS members against Apple regarding App Store Monopoly

https://www.cnbc.com/2019/05/13/supreme-court-rules-against-apple-in-app-store-antitrust-case.html

The Supreme Court on Monday ruled 5-4 against Apple in a case involving its signature electronic marketplace, the App Store, allowing iPhone users to move forward with their suit against the company.

The iPhone users argued that Apple’s 30% commission on sales through the App Store is passed along to consumers, an unfair use of monopoly power that ultimately results in inflated prices.

Apple argued that only app developers, and not users, should be able to bring such a lawsuit. But the Supreme Court, in an opinion authored by Justice Brett Kavanaugh, rejected that claim.

“Apple’s line-drawing does not make a lot of sense, other than as a way to gerrymander Apple out of this and similar lawsuits,” Kavanaugh wrote.

Shares of Apple, already battered by trade concerns, were down more than 5%, lagging the broader market.

Cliven Bundy's Federal lands Lawsuit is rejected for a fourth time.

https://www.oregonlive.com/crime/2019/04/cliven-bundys-claim-that-all-public-land-belongs-to-state-of-nevada-is-simply-delusional-judge-rules.html
"It is painfully obvious that the claims asserted by Bundy in the instant matter rest upon a fundamentally flawed notion advanced by Bundy since 1998 regarding ownership of federal public lands in Nevada. For two decades, Bundy has made the same claims that federal public lands within Nevada belong not to the United States, but instead to the State of Nevada,'' the judge wrote. "Three federal court decisions -- Bundy I, Bundy II, and Bundy Ill -- have now considered and rejected Bundy’s repeated arguments.''
