Democratic presidential candidate Beto O'Rourke released a proposal last week to achieve equality for LGBTQ Americans and reinstate protections abandoned by President Donald Trump.

The plan—O'Rourke's sixth major policy rollout—is heavy on executive actions he would pursue to support the LGBTQ community. It also prescribes legislation he would champion and steps that can be taken on the global stage.

"We must ensure all Americans are treated equally no matter who they are or who they love," the former El Paso congressman said in a statement on the proposal, which comes amid LGBTQ Pride Month and arrived hours before he was set to lead a "Pride Run" in New York City.

Among the executive actions that O'Rourke would take: overturning Trump's ban on transgender people serving in the military, reversing the "deploy or get out" policy that critics say discriminates against HIV-positive service members, and bringing back Department of Education guidance that sought to protect LGBTQ students. O'Rourke would also act to crack down on conversion therapy, update blood donation requirements for LGBTQ people, increase LGBTQ representation in the census, and install more pro-LGBTQ people in government, especially in the judiciary.

O'Rourke's plan puts an emphasis on protecting transgender people—specifically transgender women of color—calling for the Department of Justice to investigate crimes against them and making sure law enforcement agencies get the right training to respond. Dallas in particular has been roiled by a recent string of slayings involving transgender women of color.

When it comes to legislation, O'Rourke backs measures such as the Equality Act, a sweeping bill passed last month by the Democratic-led House of Representatives that would overhaul the Civil Rights Act to protect LGBTQ Americans. O'Rourke also wants to make sure LGBTQ people have equal access to health care and insurance as part of any universal health-care system that his administration would pursue in Congress.

And on the international front, O'Rourke proposes things like collaborating with allies to craft a global treaty through the International Law Commission of the United Nations that would shield LGBTQ people from persecution. O'Rourke also would create a "special envoy for the human rights of LGBTQ+ people" in the Department of State.

Beto Round Table at Gullah Geechee Nation (Video Link) Updated with local news video

Local new video with reaction to Beto from a local...very, very well received.

Information about Gullah Geechee Nation

Beto is back in South Carolina, will be holding a roundtable at Gullah Geechee Nation today

If you are a parent who had kids who watched Nick in the 1990's you might remember the show "Gullah Gullah Island." I don't think I have ever heard of a candidate visiting there before but I'm betting this visit is about Climate Change and maybe Voting Rights. I hope they live stream it! I think it's supposed to start in about an hour.

I found this tweet referencing it:

Other than Beto, which candidates have recently faced a truly volatile race?

(EDIT for clarification: I am speaking political races against a Republican candidate where they were the target of VILE attack Ads by Republicans NOT media criticism or scandals or typical primary competition.)

We all know how nasty the election is going to get. It is CRUCIAL that we know how the candidates react to that level of volatility, attacks and nastiness for months on end. Do they get defensive and stumble when attacked? Do they avoid uncomfortable confrontation? Do they get defensive and reactionary? Can they block out the noise and keep working? How battle tested are they?

This is another reason why I believe that Beto is the right candidate, he doesn't let the hatefulness, nastiness and nonsense distract him from the job at hand...he just continues to work his tail off and does NOT back away from difficult questions. He addresses them with the courage of his convictions and does not get all defensive and insecure. Those character strengths are exactly what Democrats need to go up against Trump.

We all saw that hitting back doesn't work. Trump can't say Beto is low energy or little and he certainly can't imply he has health issues with him running all these 5k races. A young vibrant energetic calm and rational rock star who is both taller than Trump and quite handsome. Great ideas, charismatic, and able to inspire and motivate and bring people on board and who can shoot down EVERY Trump lie about the border and immigration because no one knows the issue better than Beto. A candidate who both appeals to progressives yet does NOT scare off moderates. A perfect balance.

Logically speaking, there couldn't be a more perfect candidate if you could created one specific to the task at hand.

An example of how Beto dealt with nasty, hateful and volatile attack ads:

Great Interview. Anyone bothered by Beto's remarks about Biden or Obama from Morning Joe should watch this for some clarity.
