Mysterious Seeds from China Being Mailed to Americans — and Officials Urge Against Planting Them

Agricultural officials are warning Americans about packages from China containing mysterious seeds after multiple states, including Kentucky, Maryland, New York, Minnesota and Washington, reported their residents receiving them in the mail.

Because the seeds are from "unknown origins," USDA officials urged Americans to refrain from planting them, as they could potentially pose a serious threat to U.S. agriculture.

So far, officials in Kentucky, Maryland, North Carolina, New York, Virginia, Utah, Minnesota and Washington have all reported cases of their residents receiving the seeds in the mail.

In Kentucky, the fourth known state to report the mysterious packages, Commissioner of Agriculture Ryan Quarles stressed the importance of not planting them in a message on his Twitter account.

Former Saddleback College receiver catches child thrown from burning building

As a former wide receiver in high school and college, Phillip Blanks has good hands.

As a retired U.S. Marine, Blanks was trained to “always be on high alert, not be complacent and to have discipline," he said.

Blanks employed all of those skills last week when he caught a 3-year-old boy who was tossed from a burning building just as the child was about to hit the ground.

The one-time member of the football team at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo was visiting a friend's apartment in Phoenix on Friday when he heard people yelling outside. Without taking the time to put his shoes on, Blanks ran out and saw the top floor of the apartment complex engulfed in flames.

I just watched Lucifer on Netflix, and...

-

it's an original series, but in Season 4, Episode 8, Lucifer was watching the Dukes of Hazard, and I noticed that they'd digitally removed the Confederate Flag from the car.

I know it's not a big deal, but it made me think of that company (can't remember the name) that removed it from it's playlist, and then wondered why they couldn't do the same thing.

Anyway, I'm going back to watch some more, and sorry about the interruption.

9 Signs That Prove Your Cat Loves You More Than Anything

9 Signs That Prove Your Cat Loves You More Than Anything

Real talk: Does this cat love me, or does it love what I can do for it? It's a question many a cat parent has pondered.

[SNIP]

Then, look out for these behaviors.

1) They treat you like you’re a cat. When cats don't feel threatened by other cats, they will show affection by rubbing on them, sleeping near them, and being in their presence. If your cat replicates those behaviors with you, Delgado says it has officially imprinted on you.

2) They rub against you. Delgado says this is the "telltale sign" your cat has accepted you into its social group.

3) They follow you into a room. If a cat is following you around, that means it wants to be around you, according to Delgado.

R.I. drops 'plantation' from state documents

Rhode Island Gov. Gina Raimondo has issued an executive order stripping the word "plantation" — a loaded term associated with slavery — from official state documents and symbols.

The state seal, found on government buildings and the state letterhead, includes an anchor, the word "hope" and the phrase "the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations."

"We can't ignore the image conjured by the word 'plantations,'" Raimondo told reporters Monday in announcing the order. "We can't ignore how painful that is for Black Rhode Islanders to see that and have to see that as part of their state's name."

[SNIP]

In 1652, Rhode Island became the first colony to officially end slavery, though it wasn't aggressively enforced until abolition was written into the state constitution nearly two centuries later.

Her dog went missing in the middle of the pandemic -- and a neighborhood of strangers found a mission

Her dog went missing in the middle of the pandemic — and a neighborhood of strangers found a mission

Someday, when scholars attempt to convey the historical undulations of the year 2020, they will write about pestilence, mass death, catastrophic job losses, state violence, oceans of protesters flooding city streets in the name of racial justice and a presidential election, held during a pandemic, with no less than America’s soul in the balance.

They will not write about Finn the dog, though maybe they should.

His story unfolded well apart from the hospitals and city streets where the nation’s major dramas have been taking place. But the canine’s tale speaks to the tendencies of the human heart: our eagerness to rally around a common purpose, and our hope of recovering something loved and lost.

So today, in this space, we’ll choose Finn. Or perhaps he chose us and is, right now, choosing you. Dogs have a way of knowing when we need them.

Amazon driver gets bizarre instructions for delivering package

When Lynn Staffieri, a resident of Magnolia, Delaware, saw her Amazon delivery driver running away from her house, she wondered what she just witnessed.

She received the notification through her Nest doorbell, a service that provides video-capture for home-monitoring and security.

"I saw the Amazon lady running away from the door and I thought 'Oh, that's weird,'" Staffieri said. "I didn't have the audio at first when I saw it so I didn't know what was going on."

When she came home and saw the footage in full, she learned that her son was behind it. He added unique delivery instructions to the order.

Trump Family Asks Court to Stop Publication of Tell-All by President's Niece

Source: NYT

-

President Trump’s family is seeking a temporary restraining order to try to block publication of a tell-all book by the president’s niece, Mary L. Trump.

Ms. Trump is the daughter of the president’s late brother, Fred Trump Jr., and her book, “Too Much and Never Enough: How My Family Created the World’s Most Dangerous Man,” is scheduled to be published by Simon & Schuster on July 28.

A person familiar with the matter said a request for a temporary restraining order was filed on Tuesday by Mr. Trump’s younger brother, Robert S. Trump, in Queens County Surrogate’s Court, where the estate of the president’s father, Fred Trump Sr., was settled.

The filing is against Ms. Trump and Simon & Schuster, and it seeks to stop publication on the grounds that Ms. Trump is violating a nondisclosure agreement related to the settlement of the estate.
