NYT OP: 1918 Germany Has a Warning for America

No myth has such an irresistible appeal for the right as 'The stab in the back'.

1918 Germany Has a Warning for America

Donald Trump’s “Stop the Steal” campaign recalls one of the most disastrous political lies of the 20th century.

HAMBURG, Germany — It may well be that Germans have a special inclination to panic at specters from the past, and I admit that this alarmism annoys me at times. Yet watching President Trump’s “Stop the Steal” campaign since Election Day, I can’t help but see a parallel to one of the most dreadful episodes from Germany’s history.

One hundred years ago, amid the implosions of Imperial Germany, powerful conservatives who led the country into war refused to accept that they had lost. Their denial gave birth to arguably the most potent and disastrous political lie of the 20th century — the Dolchstosslegende, or stab-in-the-back myth.

Its core claim was that Imperial Germany never lost World War I. Defeat, its proponents said, was declared but not warranted. It was a conspiracy, a con, a capitulation — a grave betrayal that forever stained the nation. That the claim was palpably false didn’t matter. Among a sizable number of Germans, it stirred resentment, humiliation and anger. And the one figure who knew best how to exploit their frustration was Adolf Hitler.

Don’t get me wrong: This is not about comparing Mr. Trump to Hitler, which would be absurd. But the Dolchstosslegende provides a warning. It’s tempting to dismiss Mr. Trump’s irrational claim that the election was “rigged” as a laughable last convulsion of his reign or a cynical bid to heighten the market value for the TV personality he might once again intend to become, especially as he appears to be giving up on his effort to overturn the election result.

But that would be a grave error. Instead, the campaign should be seen as what it is: an attempt to elevate “They stole it” to the level of legend, perhaps seeding for the future social polarization and division on a scale America has never seen.

You ever seen a lazy raccoon?

Love this Covid ad, but the Germans don't seem to know much about raccoons.

We did - absolutely nothing - being as lazy as raccoons. Maybe, if they got to around putting the trash out in raccoon territory, they might have learned something about our not so lazy little critters.

White women vote Republican. Get used to it, Democrats.

Dear Ms. Lenz, you can't hang an entire contemptous polemic on one number - the iffy result of one 2020 poll.

The last two exit polls we have on white women are
2016: 52 - 44 (GOP)
2018: 49 - 49 tie

The numbers for 2020, 55 - 42 (GOP), that so delighted Ms. Lenz, as reported by Edison Research, do not come from a reliable exit poll, and cannot be compared to 2016.

Voting in 2020 was radically different than in earlier years. Edison attempted to cover all voters but the result was a second rate kludge. Here is the breakdown:

65m absentee (telephone surveys)
35m early voters (telephone surveys, and some post voting interviews)
55m on election day voters (all post voting interviews)

https://www.edisonresearch.com/election-polling/

The 2016 exit polls were all election day interviews. This is important for two reasons. First, exit interviews are the gold standard - On the day you know that someone has voted, and are most likely to get an accurate answers. And Second - This Year - election day voters were heavily skewed towards the GOP. Edison had to reweight bewteen on the day, and democratic mail in / early votes - but had no scientific basis for doing so.

And telephone polls are ... telephone polls ... oh so reliable . Why should we believe Edison's over any of the others? For example, the IBD/TIPP poll of Oct 29- Nov 2. had Biden +4, and leading 51 - 45 with white women.

In short - 'White women vote Republican. Get used to it, Democrats?' Keep the sneer to yourself Ms. Lenz. Do some research or shut the fuck up.

Angus Young, poet?

AC/DC's 'Through the Mists of Time' is a moving reflection on the band's long career.

See dark shadows on the walls
See the pictures
Some hang, some fall
And the painted faces all in a line

And the painted ladies
Yeah the painted ladies
Through the mists of time

Hear the whisper of the whirlwind
Watch the shadows; A light gone dim
Dark horses roam in my sleep
Mystic voices conjure up our dreams.

For female fans, who suffered through misogynistic lyrics

And the painted ladies ...
And the painted faces
Looking so divine
Through the mists of time

The song ends with

The mists of time
Of the restless kind
Through the mists of time
On a magic ride
Searchin' for a sign
Through the mists of time

Kayleigh McEnany's press release on Flynn

'today’s action sets right an injustice against an innocent man and an American hero'

Statement from the Press Secretary Regarding Executive Grant of Clemency for General Michael T. Flynn
Issued on: November 25, 2020

Today, President Donald J. Trump signed an Executive Grant of Clemency granting a Full Pardon to General Michael T. Flynn. The President has pardoned General Flynn because he should never have been prosecuted. An independent review of General Flynn’s case by the Department of Justice—conducted by respected career professionals—supports this conclusion. In fact, the Department of Justice has firmly concluded that the charges against General Flynn should be dropped. This Full Pardon achieves that objective, finally bringing to an end the relentless, partisan pursuit of an innocent man.

General Flynn should not require a pardon. He is an innocent man. Even the FBI agents who interviewed General Flynn did not think he was lying. Multiple investigations have produced evidence establishing that General Flynn was the victim of partisan government officials engaged in a coordinated attempt to subvert the election of 2016. These individuals sought to prevent Donald Trump from being elected to the Presidency, to block him from assuming that office upon his election, to remove him from office after his inauguration, and to undermine his Administration at every turn.

The prosecution of General Flynn is yet another reminder of something that has long been clear: After the 2016 election, individuals within the outgoing administration refused to accept the choice the American people had made at the ballot box and worked to undermine the peaceful transition of power. These efforts were enabled by a complicit media that willingly published falsehoods and hid inconvenient facts from public view, including with respect to General Flynn. They amounted to a brazen assault on our democracy and a direct attack on our fundamental political values.

While today’s action sets right an injustice against an innocent man and an American hero, it should also serve as a reminder to all of us that we must remain vigilant over those in whom we place our trust and confidence. The people who sit atop our intelligence and law enforcement agencies have tremendous power to affect the lives of their fellow citizens. The American people must always take care to scrutinize their actions, to hold them accountable, and to ensure that they use their immense power to uphold the rule of law rather than to harass, persecute, and jail their political opponents in pursuit of partisan political agendas.

Happy Thanksgiving to General Flynn and his family, and thank you all for your great service to our Nation!
