I have bad news for the progressives currently beguiled by Liz Cheney

Liberals beware: This political transformation is not, in fact, very transformative

I have bad news for the progressives currently beguiled by Liz Cheney’s deft skewering of her erstwhile Republican colleagues: She is not going to love you back.

Cheney’s new book, “Oath and Honor: A Memoir and a Warning,” has become an immediate bestseller based on its promise to bring even more receipts to the Trump indictment party. (And she does have receipts.) Her message to anyone who has ever knitted a “pussy hat” hits right in the feels: Donald Trump is a “grave threat” to American democracy, a man “willing to torch the constitution,” and thus “[h]e has to be defeated, and people can’t be bystanders.”

Ironically, her last book had an equally dire warning — about Democrats post-Barack Obama. “Our next president must be committed to restoring America’s power and strength,” she and her father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, wrote in “Exceptional: Why the World Needs a Powerful America.” “Our security and the survival of freedom depend on it.” It’s almost as if they were calling for our next president to make America great again.

Others have illustrated the straight line that connects the rabid anti-Obama xenophobia and racism of the tea party movement — a movement Cheney embraced — and the mob that forced its way into the Capitol on Jan. 6. That ideological genealogy doesn’t make Cheney responsible for Jan. 6. Nor does it mean we shouldn’t take her current warnings less seriously. But it should temper the applause she gets in 2023 for making the same observations that plenty of people made in 2015. Democrats should be wary of investing this much political capital in a politician who is all but telling them about her intention to eventually betray them.

A Fair Housing organization is leaving Twitter/X

We're Leaving X. This is Why.

After a period of reflection and an assessment of our current activity on social media platforms, the Metropolitan Milwaukee Fair Housing Council has decided that it will no longer participate on X, formerly known as Twitter.

The owner of X has made his personal brand synonymous with the platform, giving him outsized power to shape the conversations that happen there. His direct amplification of antisemitic messages and his tacit approval of hate speech on X is in direct conflict with the values of the Metropolitan Milwaukee Fair Housing Council. While we hold a dual commitment to free speech and to the fight against hate, we and all others must exercise careful discernment when deciding how we hold those commitments simultaneously. We acknowledge that others may arrive at different conclusions, but in good conscience, we have determined that to participate on a platform that is so clearly out of alignment with our values would be a form of silent complicity with hate.

The Rock says multiple political parties approached him to run for President

The Rock says attempts have been made to get him to run for President of the United States.

During an appearance on Trevor Noah's new podcast, Dwayne Johnson was asked about a 2021 poll that claimed 46 percent of adults in the United States would support his campaign for president. According to Rock, several political parties approached him in 2022 with more research supporting the idea he would be a real contender in a presidential election.

“That was an interesting poll that happened and I was really moved by that,” Johnson said. “I was really blown away and I was really honored. I’ll share this little bit with you: at the end of the year in 2022, I got a visit from the parties asking me if I was going to run, and if I could run.”

“It was a big deal, and it came out of the blue,” Johnson continued. “It was one after the other, and they brought up that poll, and they also brought up their own deep-dive research that would prove that should I ever go down that road [I’d be a real contender]. It was all very surreal because that’s never been my goal. My goal has never been to be in politics. As a matter of fact, there’s a lot about politics that I hate.”

The sad truth about war is

For most, it is immensely devastating.

But for a few, it is incredibly profitable-including the inevitable rebuilding.

We must always do everything we can not to be manipulated into hate by those who live to destroy decency.
