We're not stupid': CNN's Van Jones accuses prosecutors of putting ex-cop Chauvin on path to 'exonera

‘We’re not stupid’: CNN’s Van Jones accuses prosecutors of putting ex-cop Chauvin on path to ‘exoneration’ for Floyd death
Published 3 mins ago on May 30, 2020By Matthew Chapman

On CNN Saturday, commentator Van Jones warned that the prosecution of the Minneapolis police officer involved in the death of George Floyd sets him up to be left off easy.

“The idea that you could have a lynching, you know, an officer lynch a man,” said Jones. “That was a lynching. Not one minute, not two minutes, not three minutes, six, seven, eight minutes, providing someone of oxygen, a spectacle in front of a whole community, you have a lynching. You have not just an officer doing it, but you have three police officers there and do nothing to intervene, in fact defend him. You can then give — I’ve never heard of third degree murder. I’m an attorney. I’m in my 50s. I’ve never heard of third degree murder. Not to arrest the other officers and we’re all going to say thank you very much and go back to what we’re doing."

"You know, if you have third degree murder, this guy is going to plea down to a traffic ticket,” said Jones. “I’ve been black a long time. We’re not stupid. This is the beginning of an exoneration, not a conviction. We’re very sophisticated in our community about how law enforcement works. But you always get a bunch of charges in the community, in the hood, you’ll get 57 charges, and then you’ll plea down to four."

WASHINGTON — Five sailors on the U.S. aircraft carrier sidelined in Guam due to a COVID-19 outbreak have tested positive for the virus for the second time and have been taken off the ship, according to the Navy.

The resurgence of the virus in the five sailors on the USS Theodore Roosevelt underscores the befuddling behavior of the highly contagious virus and raises questions about how troops that test positive can be reintegrated into the military, particularly on ship.

Major medical journal demands Trump’s removal over abject failures of COVID-19 response
Published 6 hours ago on May 15, 2020By Tom Boggioni

In a very rare commentary on political matters, the editors of the esteemed medical journal The Lancet called for a new president in 2021 who can competently deal with a major health crisis by letting health care professionals do their jobs.

The editors called out President Donald Trump and some of his top aides for undercutting the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) at a time when the U.S. and the world at large are being ravaged by the coronavirus.

Researchers from MIT and Harvard are working to develop a mask that lights up when it detects the new coronavirus, Business Insider reports. It's a technology already being worked on to detect Zika and Ebola.

The mask would "produce a fluorescent signal when a person with the coronavirus breathes, coughs or sneezes," BI reports. It could provide another layer of on-the-spot screening. Doctors could also use it as a preliminary way of testing patients for the virus before having to send samples to a lab.

JACKSON, Tenn. — An airport hanger in Jackson, Tennessee, is housing more than airplanes. Inside N95 respirators will be set for recycling.

“Our goal is to receive the masks and send them back out within 72 hours," said Ryan Stahlin, the site lead at Battelle Critical Care Decontamination System.

Stahlin says Battelle is working to address the current shortage of personal protective equipment or PPE during the COVID-19 pandemic. For healthcare workers on the front lines, a mask is part of their safety net. Crates now empty will see thousands of masks cleaned with hydrogen peroxide vapor.

FEMA cancels $55 million contract for N95 masks

https://www.cnn.com/2020/05/13/politics/fema-ppe-contract-cancelled-coronavirus/index.html

CNN)The Federal Emergency Management Agency canceled a $55 million unfulfilled contract with a Virginia company for an order of N95 masks that was supposed to be sent earlier this month -- the latest in a string of cancellations many states and agencies have faced amid the scramble to procure personal protective equipment for front-line workers.

The company, Panthera Worldwide LLC, was awarded the contract on April 1 -- to be fulfilled by May 1 -- but it requested an extension for May 11. A FEMA official told CNN that FEMA reviewed the company, which is not a manufacturer, and believed it would be able to fulfill the contract. But when Panthera requested another delivery extension of 96 hours on May 11, FEMA denied the extension and canceled the contract. No money was paid for the contract, according to the official.

Why would FEMA not buy directly from manufacturer? And why cancel?
