Waiting to oppose in the Senate, however, is an individual who stood with Biden in 1973 in calling for public financing of elections. But that politician then took a very different path.
Today, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is the nation's leading opponent of Biden's public financing goal -- and of just about every other campaign finance reform.
The Biden mission began in the middle of the Watergate scandals. I was present at its inception:
While waiting to testify about campaign finance reform before the Senate Rules Committee in June 1973, I watched the then 30-year-old Sen. Biden testify. As legislative director of Common Cause, I was there to advocate for public financing as an essential response to the historic Watergate campaign finance scandals, which included sales of ambassadorships and government decisions made in favor of large donors.
Much to my surprise, the brand new senator from Delaware presented a powerful case to the Committee on the "absolute need for us to begin to finance elections for all federal offices."
Public financing, he explained "would allow candidates -- incumbents and challengers alike -- to compete more on the basis of merit than on the size of the pocketbook -- free from ... special-interest backers." Biden described it as "the swiftest and surest way to purge our elections system of the corruption, that, whatever the safeguards, money inevitably brings."

Harris, the Democratic Party’s vice presidential nominee, will speak in Washington, D.C., “on President Trump's failures to contain COVID-19 and protect working families from the economic fallout” and the “Biden-Harris plan to contain COVID-19 and build a different path forward in America,” former Vice President Joe Biden’s campaign said in a press release.
Trump is planning to give his speech Thursday from the White House lawn, and Harris’s remarks will serve as the Democratic Party’s main counter to his appearance.

The extreme hate groups of the 60's have always existed as a fringe.
The emergence of the John Bircher's backed White Supremacist Tea Party draws a parallel to the hate groups we see today, who would not have grown to rapid prominence without the use of social media.
This is the best book to review & read about who they were in the 60's, & the hate they encouraged that brought down President JFK & the civil rights fighters RFK and Martin Luther King.

1961, they allowed Dallas to begin one of the most painfully slow school desegregations in American history.
But the extremist anti-Kennedy hysteria persisted.
Dallas remained on edge in the months before the president arrived. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. came to speak in the city in early 1963-and there was a bomb threat against him. United Nations Ambassador Adlai Stevenson came to Dallas a month before Kennedy, to talk about the nation being part of the world community-and was attacked by a swirling, spitting, xenophobic mob.
When Kennedy arrived in November, he was greeted by a full page advertisement in the Dallas Morning News accusing him of being a Communist sympathizer.
More chillingly, General Walker's troops had distributed thousands of handbills along the streets of Dallas, picturing Kennedy on a "wanted" poster with the message: "WANTED FOR TREASON."
And then Kennedy was killed.

When Barack Obama visited Dallas in 2010, Tea Party fever was breaking out and he was greeted by nearly 1,000 protesters. The crowd gathered in a high school football stadium and held signs that would have looked very much at home in the Dallas of 1963.
The placards accused Obama of being a socialist, of being a traitor, of committing treason. The confederate flags of 1963 have been replaced by the Tea Party's "Don't Tread on Me" banners.
Outside the stadium stood a lone pair of counter-protesters. Their sign made explicit the connection between the anti-JFK and anti-Obama hatred: "HATERS KILLED JFK."
In 2013, the extremist movement that began in Dallas is no longer confined to the city. Back in 1963, Dallas made national front-page news for its violent, hate-filled protests against Kennedy's "socialism." These days, Tea Party protests calling the president a traitor are so common-and are ubiquitous in all corners of the country-that they barely make a dent in the news.
John Kennedy, if he visited Dallas today, would no longer see a city uniquely defined as a "city of hate."
But if he looked around the country, he would see that the Dallas virus has gone national
