Police report: Arrested Opa-locka cop beat wife, kids for years. He’s the mayor’s brother

An Opa-locka police sergeant arrested Tuesday night on three domestic abuse charges physically battered and threatened to kill family members for almost a decade, police said on Wednesday.

The wife of Johane Hendrik Taylor told police that several times dating back to 2014 her husband hit her with closed fists, once even breaking a rib and trying to drag her outside while she was unconscious. Another time, the woman’s mother told police, she saw Taylor hit one of her grandchildren over the head with a vacuum cleaner.

“The mother has alleged that the defendant has abused the children since the oldest child was three years of age and she is currently 13 years of age,” the arresting officer from the city or Miramar wrote in his report.

Taylor, 36, is the youngest son of former Opa-locka Mayor Myra Taylor and the brother of the city’s current Mayor John Taylor.

Dashcam video shows officers appear to fail field sobriety tests

Racine County Sheriff's Office Lt. Shawn Barker and Racine police Officer Todd Lauer were arrested for operating while intoxicated. It happened Feb. 11 while snowmobiling in Vilas County in northern Wisconsin.

According to the Vilas County Sheriff's Office, deputies saw both men blowing through stop signs and driving snowmobiles. During the stop, the report says Barker pulled out his law enforcement id. Lauer showed his badge.

Lauer admitted to the deputy on camera that he had been drinking for hours, starting at 6 p.m. and having his last drink around 10 p.m.

Lauer and Barker were later arrested after failing field sobriety tests. Investigators also said both men had glossy, bloodshot eyes, slurred speech and smelled of alcohol.

Why Do Law Enforcers Keep Stealing Forfeiture Funds?

Why Do Law Enforcers Keep Stealing Forfeiture Funds?

Last week the Albany County, New York Sheriff announced that an employee in his business office had stolen more than $68,000 out of a federal forfeiture fund. The employee, who oversaw the department’s budget, had apparently been using the money to pay off gambling debts.

It's a sad story that mirrors other thefts uncovered in recent years. A drug task force detective in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania is being prosecuted for stealing more than $200,000 in cash by taking it from a government safe and skimming it from deposits before it was handed over to a county treasurer.

In Macomb County, Michigan, a prosecutor is charged with embezzling over $600,000 in forfeiture funds. In a throwback to the “Mad Men” era, the prosecutor was using some of the money to pay for flowers and makeup for secretaries. He also spent lavishly on a security system for his own home, catering for country club parties, and donations to churches and schools.

Hillsborough jail deputy suspected of selling THC products to inmates resigns

A detention deputy for the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office has resigned amid an investigation into allegations he sold THC oil vape pens and edibles to inmates in the county jail.

Deputy Marlon Blankenship resigned during an ongoing investigation that could result in criminal charges, the sheriff’s office confirmed this week. A spokesperson said other details would be provided through a records request submitted by the Tampa Bay Times.

The records had not been released by Thursday but two search warrant affidavits released by the Clerk of Court’s office this week include details about how the investigation started and some of the evidence already gathered.

Florida City Awards $2M Settlement to Family of Black Church Drummer Killed By Cop After His SUV Broke Down: ‘He Did Everything Right’

The family of a Black man who was killed by a police officer in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, in 2015 reached a $2 million settlement with the city on Feb. 23.

Corey Jones reportedly was killed on an interstate exit ramp by the officer after his SUV broke down.

Palm Beach Gardens police officer Nouman Raja shot and killed 31-year-old Jones at approximately 3:15 a.m. on Oct. 18, 2015, after seeing his SUV stalled on the exit ramp on an I-95 exit ramp and PGA Boulevard. The housing inspector and church drummer was on his way home from playing a gig with his reggae band.

Jones carried a handgun and was authorized to carry a concealed weapon. He bought the firearm to protect his drum set worth $10,000, which he had in his vehicle when he was approached by Raja.

Raja worked for the city’s auto burglary investigation team and wore plain clothes but was told to wear his police vest if he ever approached a civilian, which in this instance he reportedly didn’t do. Raja was wearing a baseball hat, jeans and a T-shirt when he approached Jones by driving an unmarked van up the exit ramp in the wrong direction.
