Walton Hills police ripped woman out of car during traffic stop, slammed her against car after she started recording officer, lawsuit says

A Walton Hills police officer grabbed a woman by the arm and ripped her from her car during a traffic stop after she started recording the officer with her cellphone, according to a lawsuit.

Amanda Mills suffered several injuries, including a broken wrist bone and permanent injuries to her breasts during the Feb. 19, 2022, traffic stop, her attorney, John Pfleiderer, said.

Mills filed the lawsuit in federal court in Cleveland last month against the small village in southeast Cuyahoga County and officer C.J. Schmidt, accusing the officer of using excessive force.

She “was subject to violent, unnecessary and needless abuse” by officers and that she suffered pain, mental and emotional harm and deprivation of civil rights because of the incident, Pfleiderer wrote in the lawsuit.

Kentucky State Police pay $130K settlement in 2020 excessive force lawsuit

The Kentucky State Police have settled a federal lawsuit involving two troopers who beat Alex Hornback at his Shepherdsville home during an April 2020 arrest and allegedly lied about it under oath.

U.S. District Judge Rebecca Grady Jennings dismissed the case on Jan. 23 after the state police agreed to pay Hornback, his father, and their lawyer $130,000, according to a copy of the settlement agreement obtained from the agency by the Kentucky Center for Investigative Reporting through an open-records request.

KyCIR reported on the lawsuit in a February 2022 story highlighting court cases in which state troopers were accused of giving false testimony about using force or omitted essential details.

Thomas Czartorski, one of the two troopers involved in the Hornback beating, which was captured by a hidden home-security camera, agreed to pay an additional $5,000. Neither the agency nor the troopers admitted wrongdoing as part of the settlement.

Embattled Metro police Sgt. Eric Huxley appeared before a judge Tuesday afternoon on felony charges of official misconduct and battery.

Police body camera video captured Huxley kicking a man in the face during a Sept. 24, 2021 arrest for disorderly conduct.

Huxley faces state and federal charges. More than a year after the incident, a federal grand jury indicted Huxley for violating Jermaine Vaughn's civil rights by using excessive force.

New York Will Pay Millions to Protesters Violently Corralled by Police

New York Will Pay Millions to Protesters Violently Corralled by Police

The police boxed in racial justice demonstrators in 2020, an anti-protest practice known as “kettling,” then hit them with batons and pepper spray. Hundreds will receive $21,500 each.

New York City has agreed to pay $21,500 to each of hundreds of demonstrators who were penned in by the police in the Bronx during racial justice protests in 2020, then charged at or beaten with batons, according to a legal settlement.

If a judge approves the settlement filed in federal court late Tuesday, the amount would be one of the highest ever awarded per person in a class action case of mass arrests, and could cost the city between $4 million and $6 million.
