About Me

Thank you Democratic Underground for keeping me sane for the last four years. I think I was probably the longest lurker here. I started following DU during the Dubya administration. I was first attracted to the "Top Ten Conservative Idiots of the Week." I've been following along ever since. I always felt guilty for not participating, but refrained from doing so because I already spend way too much time online. However, after recent events, I just can't sit back any longer. I had to log on and thank you folks for all that you do. I'm a retired TV newscast director with forty years experience and more than eighteen thousand broadcasts under my belt, most of them live. I now travel the country (when I can) shooting landscape, astro and wildlife photography. You can see some of my photos at Ross-Kestin.Pixels.com or on Instagram at @oldguywithacamera. Thanks again! Balllarat Ghost Town

Ballarat Ghost Town lies in Panamint Valley, a desolate area that lies on Death Valley's western border, and shares its forbidding climate and terrain. I was in the area for a Dark Sky Festival, but I couldn't wait to spend some time here as well.

This truck pictured below allegedly belonged to Tex Watson of the Manson Family. Their hideout was nearby.

It seems I have to go back. I didn't know there was a cemetery.

More from Alaska

Some random shots of the cruise ship NCL Encore at night, shot handheld with a Canon 6dmII and EF17-40mm lens. I threw in a shot of Downtown Seattle for good measure. I love ultrawide lenses.

More Beauty from Alaska

These are some very grainy shots taken at great distance in the rain from the deck of a small boat bouncing around on Sitka Sound in failing light.

Big rebates on Canon RF lenses.

Good news for Canon mirrorless users. Canon is giving some big instant rebates on many of their RF lenses. The sale started this morning, but I don't know how long it runs.

Any word yet on next month's photography contest?

Asking for a friend.

(OK, I'm really asking for me).

Backyard Shenanigans

It's been three weeks since my surgery, and I have one more week of taking it easy to get through. I've been really bored, so I thought I'd brush up on my editing skills. Also, I've been wanting to try shooting some 4k video with my Canon R5. I edited the video with Adobe Premiere Pro and created the music using Music Maker looping software.

Enjoy. Please tell me what you think.
