First on CNN: DHS inspector general meets with House select committee regarding Secret Service erasi

Source: CNN

The Department of Homeland Security inspector general on Friday briefed all nine members of the House select committee investigating the US Capitol attack on January 6, 2021, about the Secret Service erasing text messages from the day of the riot and the day before.

The inspector general, Joseph Cuffari, met with the committee behind closed doors two days after sending a letter to lawmakers informing them that the text messages were erased after the watchdog agency asked for records related to its electronic communications as part of its ongoing investigation around the Capitol attack.

CNN saw Cuffari and every member of the House committee enter a meeting room on Capitol Hill.

The inspector general originally notified the House and Senate Homeland Security Committees in a letter that the text messages were erased from the system as part of a device-replacement program after the watchdog asked the agency for the records.

“First, the Department notified us that many US Secret Service text messages from January 5 and 6, 2021, were erased as part of a device-replacement program. The USSS erased those text messages after OIG requested records of electronic communications from the USSS, as part of our evaluation of events at the Capitol on January 6,” Cuffari stated in the letter.

“Second, DHS personnel have repeatedly told OIG inspectors that they were not permitted to provide records directly to OIG and that such records had to first undergo review by DHS attorneys,” Cuffari added. “This review led to weeks-long delays in OIG obtaining records and created confusion over whether all records had been produced.”

The Secret Service pushed back on the allegations late Thursday night, saying: “The insinuation that the Secret Service maliciously deleted text messages following a request is false.”

Steve Bannon says he's willing to testify before January 6 committee after Trump waives claims of ex

Steve Bannon – who defied a congressional subpoena and is set to go to trial on criminal contempt charges – told the House select committee investigating the January 6, 2021, insurrection on Saturday that he is now willing to testify, ideally at a public hearing, according to a letter obtained by CNN.

Bannon’s reversal comes after he received a letter from former President Donald Trump waiving executive privilege, although both the House select committee and federal prosecutors contend that privilege claim never gave Bannon carte blanche to ignore a congressional subpoena in the first place.

Bannon was charged last year with two counts of criminal contempt of Congress. He has argued that he was free to ignore his congressional subpoena in order to protect Trump’s potential privilege claims. But federal prosecutors and other legal experts have argued that privilege does not apply to Bannon – who left his White House gig as chief strategist years before the Capitol riot – and did not give him the authority to refuse to provide any documents or testimony to the committee.

Bannon’s team provided Trump’s new letter to the January 6 committee overnight, along with a letter from Bannon lawyer Bob Costello.

“While Mr. Bannon has been steadfast in his convictions, circumstances have now changed,” Costello wrote. “Mr. Bannon is willing to, and indeed prefers, to testify at your public hearing.”

A LOT is going to happen between now and early November.

Dem candidates for Congress and Govs need to be on their best behavior, measured, honest and FACTUAL. The fact are on our side.
The arrest of Dem Rep Judy Chu for protesting is not a 'good thing' pre-election even in a safe district when the Dem message, in part, should be "no one is above the law".

We can win this but Dems need to throw all of the facts at GOP opponents. That Republicans are taking away our rights and destroying democracy.

The J6 Committee and DOJ could have an explosive influence on swing voters but we really shouldn't even count on that.

Please give $$ as generously as you can to your preferred candidate in need of help.
