Haunting words this Memorial Day weekend.

In March I posted John McDermott's version of the Irish air The Minstrel Boy by the 19th century poet Tom Moore in honor of St. Patrick's Day.
But one of the comments that accompanied the YouTube version of the song has continued to haunt me. The words ought to be better.known. Today I reprint them in full:

Today it is 14 years since my brother Sgt. Christopher P. Geiger died in Afghanistan in service of the country he so much loved. This song was requested to be played at his funeral if he were not to come back. Unfortunately the request was honored. Seven years ago I honored my big brother the best way I could by naming my only son after him. I know you are watching over your nephew and I. God bless you my brother and God bless America. You are a true patriot and you were my hero.
Terrance Geiger

Here is the song:

Covid in Connecticut

On May 16 the 7 day average for new cases was 2739 per the NY Times. On May 27 the number was 1264.
There have been significant drops in the other Northeast states but not as large as in CT.

Kyiv is feeling more and more like Kyiv.

Wonderful videos in the short thread.

I hope soon to be able to visit a free and peaceful Ukraine

Multiple reports of Ukraine going on the offensive in Kherson.

Kherson is in SW Ukraine near Crimea.
I've been following rumors since last night but we are beginning to get some confirmation. Don't know how large or what will happen. But hoping for the best. Maybe it takes pressure off Donbas?
I'll report more if I read anything.

What the police should have done in Texas.

This is from my expert on military logistics. I think he knows what he is talking about here:

7 part thread.

I don't know how many could have been saved but the police shouldn't have waited. Children's lives were at stake.

Guns will be banned when Trump talks to the NRA tomorrow.

From today's NY Times:

The event’s political keynoters — Gov. Greg Abbott of Texas, Senator Ted Cruz and Gov. Kristi Noem of South Dakota — all plan to attend. Former President Donald J. Trump is scheduled to appear on Friday, although those in attendance will be prohibited from carrying firearms to his speech by the Secret Service.
