Democratic Underground and all the people who make it what it is I am thanking you for day after day having news posts

selected by and for progressive/liberal thinkers. The articles and videos posted from a wide variety of sources.
Thank you for the selections, some informative, all interesting and as a whole letting me know that being a liberal democratic (small d) is not a dead idea no matter how hard the authoritarians have tried to outright kill the idea.

I don't comment much because I am more comfortable in opposition when in a discussion but I do appreciate all of you and often spend as much time reading through the comments as I do with the articles.

I am glad this forum exists and I appreciate your thoughts. Thank you.

A Comprehensive Look At DOGE's Firings and Layoffs So Far

WASHINGTON (AP) — Thousands of federal government employees have been shown the door in the first month of President Donald Trump’s administration as the White House and its Department of Government Efficiency fire both new and career workers, tell agency leaders to plan for “large-scale reductions in force” and freeze trillions of dollars in federal grant funds.

It is affecting more than just the national capital region, home to about 20% of the 2.4 million members of the civilian federal workforce, which does not include military personnel and postal workers. More than 80% of that workforce lives outside the Washington area.

There is no official figure available of the total firings or layoffs. The Associated Press tallied how agencies are being affected based on AP reporting and statements from lawmakers and employee unions.

Senate confirms Tulsi Gabbard to be Director of National Intelligence

Source: msnbc.com

The Senate voted to confirm Tulsi Gabbard as director of national intelligence on Wednesday, elevating a former lawmaker with controversial foreign policy views to the head of the country’s spy agencies.

Gabbard was confirmed on a 52-48 vote. Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., was the only Republican to oppose Gabbard’s confirmation.

A former Democratic congresswoman turned Republican, Gabbard was initially considered a long shot for DNI given her history of going against U.S. intelligence consensus and her warm views on American adversaries like Russian President Vladimir Putin and now-deposed Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad.

How Trump plans to block Democrats from voting in future elections. (Why we can't count on the 2026 Midterms.) 13 mins.

I believe the only reason Trump won in 2024 is with successful voter suppression.

This video is from Anthony Davis of 5 Minute News and provides the details of how it was done and how with new legislation now in Congress it will be made more difficult to vote in 2026.

This is why I hope the Democratic Party will focus on helping voters get registered including setting up a fund to help with the fees needed to obtain copies of marriage certificates needed by married women who took their husband's name because without that a birth certificate is not enough. I just had to order a marriage certificate in California the cost is $17 and is needed for the new, Real ID, and to renew my passport which I unfortunately allowed to expire too long ago for renewal without new documents.

Locally and individually, we can help people in our communities obtain the forms and applications to get copies of their necessary to register to vote documents.

Aviation expert predicts cause of deadly Washington plane crash. A rational explanation of the air crash: 2:51 mins.

There are countless speculations & claims about the very tragic airplane/helicopter crash. This is the most rational, but still speculative explanation I have seen so far today.

Warning-to-Whistleblowers-We-Are-Back-in-the-Days-of-the-Red-Scare: from Mother Jones

This is something I have been worried about recently and I appreciate that Mother Jones has provided an article about it. I do believe that Trump will see that whistleblowers are punished for coming forth with the truth.

Government employees who report possible malfeasance are almost certain to be targeted by the second Trump administration. Mark Zaid is a lawyer likely to represent some of them; over the past two decades, he has provided legal counsel to a long list of federal employees and intelligence officers, including whistleblowers.

His most high-profile whistleblower case, however, was that of the intelligence officer who reported to an inspector general that then-President Donald Trump pressed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to find political dirt on his presidential rival. While dangling military aid to Ukraine that Congress already had approved, Trump asked Zelenskyy to investigate the family of Joe Biden, a leading Democratic contender to face Trump in 2020. This whistleblower’s 2019 report led to Trump’s first impeachment case.

The case of that whistleblower—whose identity Zaid has never revealed publicly—was far from the first time a concerned citizen came forward with potentially damaging information about the government: In 2002, FBI special agent Coleen Rowley wrote a letter to then-FBI Director Robert Mueller alleging that the agency failed to properly investigate a terrorist later found to be connected to the September 11 attacks. Another whistleblower was military police officer Joseph Darby, who informed the Army Criminal Investigation Division of pictures showing US military personnel torturing inmates at Iraq’s Abu Ghraib prison in 2004.

Elon Musk takes aim at MacKenzie Scott again for giving billions to liberal causes, calling the gifts 'concerning'

This paragraph is from near the bottom of the article:

"'Super rich ex-wives who hate their former spouse' should filed be listed among 'Reasons that Western Civilization died,'" Musk said in a now-deleted X post in March."

From the top of the article:
The Tesla and SpaceX CEO shared on Monday an X post written by John LeFevre criticizing Scott. The author and ex-banker's post sounded the alarm on Scott's gifts to nonprofits focused on issues such as racial equity, social justice, immigration protections, and LGBTQ+ rights.

Scott, the ex-wife of Amazon's founder, Jeff Bezos, has donated over $19 billion to more than 2,450 nonprofits since 2019 via her Yield Giving organization. Her net worth remains above $30 billion thanks to the rising value of her Amazon shares.

More details about JFK assassination keep emerging, even 61 years later-(unseen before bit of video in article )

Sixty-one years ago, on November 22, 1963, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas, in a shocking tragedy that still echoes.

The JFK assassination sent the nation into mourning and shook it to its core, as Americans searched for answers. Hundreds of books have been written on it along with multiple films and documentaries, with bits and pieces of information continuing to emerge to this day.

It even figured in the 2024 presidential campaign. President-elect Donald Trump, himself a victim of an assassination attempt, promised to declassify all government records about the Kennedy assassination, according to the Associated Press.
