Toyota's Hydrogen Lunar Cruiser Could Someday Use Moon Ice As Fuel To Prolong Missions

Toyota’s Hydrogen Lunar Cruiser Could Someday Use Moon Ice As Fuel To Prolong Missions

Although it will need to bring its own water at first, Toyota's Lunar Cruiser could someday make its own fuel from the moon by using the ice that's already there

by Sebastien Bell | Carscoops | July 22,2023

Toyota’s expertise in the realm of hydrogen fuel cell technology could give it an advantage in space exploration. The use of water as a source of hydrogen could allow its Lunar Cruiser to embark on longer missions by using resources that are already there.

As part of Japan’s ambitions to step up its presence in space, it is participating in NASA’s Artemis program. It eventually hopes to have its own lunar space station called Gateway in operation in the latter half of the decade.

As part of that ambition, Toyota has been working with the Japanese space agency since 2019 on the development of the Lunar Cruiser. Reuters reports that it will use hydrogen technology to allow it to drive more freely, and even possibly indefinitely, on the moon.

The project relies on Toyota’s experience in hydrogen mobility to develop a regenerative hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle for the moon. It will use solar panels to electrolyze water during the day. Then, it will use the hydrogen produced by that reaction to power the Lunar Cruiser’s electric motors during the 14-day-long lunar night...more

Can you believe the world continues to subsidize fossil fuels? ($23 Million Dollars per Minute!)

Can you believe the world continues to subsidize fossil fuels?

TONY PARADISO | EnergyCentral.com | Jul 18, 2023

If you’ve lived long enough that revelation probably isn’t surprising, but it’s nonetheless disappointing.

The World Bank puts the direct or explicit subsidies for coal, oil, and gas in 2021 at $577 billion. That’s twice the subsidies for renewable energy and almost six times higher than the climate funding promised by wealthy countries.

Big oil has sustained political influence and many local economies remain dependent on fossil fuel industries. This is despite the windfall profits Big Oil has reaped since inflation reared its ugly head. They chalk it up to productivity improvements, but that’s a load of crap. Spend two minutes reviewing their financials and it’s obvious that the record profits are coming from prices that are higher than current levels of inflation warrant.

And fossil fuels aren’t the only carbon emitters that continue to be subsidized. Agriculture also enjoys significant subsidies. You might be thinking - who would argue with subsidizing farmers? Well, first, the idea of the small family farm died a long time ago. Most farming is now big business. Sure, some small family farms remain. However, it would be easy to carve them out and assist their survival...more

Green hydrogen can help save the world, and the MENA region is primed to make it happen

Green hydrogen will help drive economic diversification, creating opportunities to develop and grow talent from KSA and beyond, while applying industry-leading technology to kickstart a worldwide hydrogen economy

David R. Edmondson | Arabian Business | 18 Jul 2023

Carbon emissions have been rising unchecked for the last 80 years, and according to the Environmental Protection Agency, they have increased 90 percent since 1970.

At the same time, we are adding approximately 80 million people to the planet every year. That’s roughly the combined population of the GCC countries.

These two facts should alarm you because they present the most significant challenge humanity has ever faced. How can we reduce carbon emissions within a short timeframe to meet essential Net Zero targets while providing enough energy to support a rapidly increasing global population?

...The region already possesses significant advantages for enabling world-scale green hydrogen production, with proven project development capabilities, available land and abundant access to wind and solar resources. Through national strategies, regulations, as well as a commitment to invest in wind and solar PV plants, electrolysers, pipelines, storage systems with complimentary education and training programmes, the wider region is very well positioned to scale up green hydrogen production and assume global leadership in this market...more

Adnoc begins construction of Middle East’s first high-speed hydrogen refuelling station

Abu Dhabi-based energy company has entered into a partnership with Toyota and Al-Futtaim Motors

John Benny | Jul 18, 2023

The station, which is being built in Masdar City by the state-owned energy company, will create clean hydrogen from water, using an electrolyser powered by clean grid electricity, Adnoc said on Tuesday.

Adnoc has also entered into a partnership with Japanese car maker Toyota and Al-Futtaim Motors to test the refuelling station using a fleet of clean hydrogen-powered vehicles.

“The need to reduce carbon emissions to address climate change is clear and urgent,” said Dr Sultan Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and Cop28 President-designate.

“Adnoc is placing sustainability and decarbonisation at the heart of its strategy and, while we decarbonise our operations today, we are making robust investments to be a supplier of choice for the clean energies of tomorrow,” said Dr Al Jaber, also Adnoc managing director and group chief executive...more

An Economy Powered by Hydrogen: How the Middle East Is Leading the Chase in Game-Changing Clean Energy Technologies?

Menafn.com | 7/17/2023

Middle Eastern nations have abundant reserves of oil and gas. The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries possess approximately 25% of the world's oil reserves and around 18% of the global natural gas reserves.

However, leaders across the region are aware that oil and gas will not be the main economic drivers forever, and many are now attempting to diversify their economies and expand their non-oil sectors.

Green hydrogen production is one of the areas the region is starting to heavily invest in. The process uses renewable energy to produce the element through electrolysis where water molecules are split into hydrogen and oxygen, capturing, and storing the hydrogen for use as fuel.

Hydrogen, the lightest and most abundant element in the universe, can be used for a wide range of applications, including power generation, energy storage, and transportation (particularly heavy transportation such as shipping and trucking). It can also be used to make sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), and most crucially, it offers a way to decarbonise “hard-to-abate” industries such as steel, aluminium, and cement, where using renewable energy alone is not possible, as well as other high-carbon industries such as fertiliser...more

Why Hydrogen Cars Refuse to Die

Lingering questions about battery EVs signal that having a backup technology isn’t as crazy as it might sound

Wall St. Journal | Stephen Wilmot | July 16, 2023

The old debate about whether electric cars should be powered by batteries, Tesla -style, or with hydrogen fuel cells, such as the Toyota Mirai, appears to have been won hands-down by batteries in recent years. So why are companies still investing in hydrogen cars?

The facetious answer is that they may be designed to convey political messages more than actual passengers. The serious one is that there are still plenty of doubts about battery EVs as a universal solution for decarbonizing road transport.

...But behind the consensus linger questions, too, about battery technology—notably how fast it can realistically take over the family-car market. One well-documented worry focuses on limited supplies of battery metals such as lithium, and another concerns the impact of battery EV charging on the power grid. Hydrogen EVs, with their completely different supply chain, could ease these scalability problems, which have a sharp geopolitical edge given China’s dominance of battery supplies.

BMW is currently touring the world with a fleet of hydrogen-adapted iX5 sport-utility vehicles to make the case for the technology, despite having little if any involvement in commercial vehicles. One of its arguments is that building roadside infrastructure for both battery EVs and hydrogen ones will end up being less expensive for countries than just building an EV infrastructure, which will require huge upgrades to the power grid....more

How smart is it to go from dependence on oil to dependence on Lithium?

Not.At.All.Smart. In fact, it is absurd. Why is it that humans have so much trouble learning from the past?

There will never ever be a shortage of hydrogen. And any nation can make it, and will. There can never be a monopoly on - or a shortage of - H2. Let that sink in.

Prague's first hydrogen-powered public transport bus is now in service

Prague has introduced its first hydrogen-powered bus, a Škoda H'CITY vehicle, into regular public transport service on line 170.

Expats.cz | 16.07.2023

Prague has made a significant move towards sustainable transportation as the city introduced the first hydrogen-powered public transport bus in the Czech Republic into regular service this weekend. The initiative is a collaboration between the City of Prague's transport company DPP, Škoda Group, ORLEN Unipetrol, and the city itself.

The Škoda H'CITY hydrogen bus commenced its pilot operation on Line No. 170 between Jižní Město and Pražská čtvrť on Friday afternoon, and is set to run on weekdays during rush hours until through end of July. Afterwards, it will operate daily for all-day service.

The decision to implement the hydrogen bus onto Line No. 170 was based on various factors, including the line's length, profile, and proximity to Prague's first hydrogen filling station, located on K Barrandovu street.

"The trial operation of a hydrogen bus on a regular route is proof that Prague is a leader in the use of the most modern technologies, smart and locally emission-free energy solutions," Prague's Deputy Mayor for Transport Zdeněk Hřib says in a press release....more
