The tech will mature with commercial vehicles, but passenger cars will follow

Leon Poultney | techradar.com | January 19, 2024

This year's CES 2024 show in Las Vegas was littered with language learning models, in-car AI assistants and the ubiquitous gargantuan infotainment displays that look set to fill our future vehicle interiors.

But now the dust has settled, it appears that the subject of hydrogen and a refocus on fuel cell-powered passenger vehicles was a key takeaway overlooked by the masses...

..."We see hydrogen being a major player in the heavy goods industry, as the technology suits the requirements of large trucks. The predictable driving patterns also make it easier to create the infrastructure required. Learnings from this can then potentially inform future passenger vehicles," Mark Freymueller, Senior Vice President Global Commercial Vehicle Business at Hyundai Motor Company told me at CES this year.

Although Hyundai made it very obvious that hydrogen was a focus, Honda – another early proponent of hydrogen fuel cell technology with its FCX Clarity model – was keen to point out that it too sees hydrogen as an important factor in future transport...more

US logistics firm opts for hydrogen trucks after testing and rejecting battery electric fleet

US logistics firm opts for hydrogen trucks after testing and rejecting battery electric fleet

16 January 2024 | Polly Martin

IMC, the largest company in the US hauling containers from ports to warehouses, has ordered 50 Nikola fuel-cell trucks for its operations in California, Arizona and Nevada, after disappointing results from two years of testing battery-electric vehicles.

The firm had purchased six Class 8 battery-electric trucks from Volvo in September 2022, as well as installing charge points capable of serving a fleet of 30, but found them wanting.

“The main challenge with battery [electric vehicles] is that you can only get four to six hours of productivity out of the truck in a 12-to-14-hour period if they are under load,” the marine drayage firm’s CEO Joel Henry told Memphis daily newspaper The Commercial Appeal.

“The problem is that it isn’t sustainable for trucking companies, which can operate diesel tractors for about 20 to 24 hours a day,” he added...more

GenH2’s fuel-cell-powered semi will hit German roads by middle of this year

IEEE SPECTRUM | WILLIE JONES | Jan 13, 2024

At CES this past week, the trucking startup Nikola showed off a hydrogen-fueled semi truck, one of its first ever built in the U.S. But the troubled company with a convicted founder is not the only player these days seeing a promising future in fuel-cell fueled big rigs. Daimler Truck has also recently announced their GenH2 electric semi. GenH2’s motors draw power from a fuel cell that runs on liquid hydrogen, and Daimler has said the vehicle will appear on German roads by mid-2024.

The company has entered agreements with several companies that have fleet operations in the German region, where Daimler successfully tested a GenH2 prototype on a track and on public roads. Via these early road tests, the company says they’ve found that a fully loaded GenH2 proved capable of hauling its roughly 25-ton payload more than 1,000 kilometers on a single fueling.

Under the Hood of the GenH2 Truck

The fuel-cell system of the GenH2 Truck, according to the company, delivers 300 kilowatts. The truck also has a battery that can kick in an additional 400 kW in short bursts for quick acceleration and hill climbing. The battery’s 70 kilowatt-hour storage capacity may seem small, bu seems it’s sufficient for recycling kinetic energy that’s converted to electric charge via regenerative braking...more

Joe Biden Is Producing More Oil Than Donald Trump Did - Newsweek

Joe Biden Is Producing More Oil Than Donald Trump Did

Aleks Phillips | Newsweek | Jan 09, 2024

American oil production has reached its largest volume in recorded history—more than 13.2 million barrels per day in October, official figures show—outpacing its highest point under Donald Trump's presidency, 13 million barrels daily in November 2019.

This is despite President Joe Biden making environmental politics and the transition to a green economy a key plank of his agenda, while his predecessor has consistently touted a desire to increase fossil fuel production to keep the price of gas and energy low for consumers.

Environmentalists say that the levels of oil production seen at present in the U.S. are not necessary to facilitate the transition to renewable energy, and that it is within the president's power to curtail it.

They warn that inaction could prove costly for Biden in the 2024 election among younger and climate-conscious voters whom he has sought to court...more

Hyundai delivered 500 FCEVs in Guangzhou, China

China Hydrogen Substack | Jian Wu | Jan 4, 2024

(Guangzhou, China) On Dec 23th, 2023, H2 Solution, a joint venture by Hyundai HTWO Guangzhou and two local state-owned companies, announced it delivered 500 FCEVs to commercial operators in Guangzhou, which is a record high in China’s FCEVs deployment.

This 500 FCEVs include logistic vehicles, freezer trucks, road sweeper and buses, it represents a fraction of 1,500 fuel cell system supply order by 2024 according to a MOU between government of Guangdong Province and Hyundai HTWO Guangzhou...

...Hyundai Motor Group is expanding its hydrogen business in China in anticipation of a rapid market growth driven by the government. China’s national hydrogen strategy- “Hydrogen Energy Development Medium and Long-term Plan (2021-2035)” announced in 2022 aims to increase the number of hydrogen electric vehicles to 50,000 and annual green hydrogen production to 100,000-200,000 tons by 2025. However, local governments are far more aggressive than central government. We noticed that Guangzhou government has just issued a municipal hydrogen plan in Dec 22th, 2023, states that Guangzhou will have a FCEVs fleet of 2,500 and 10,000 vehicles by year 2025 and 2030. We believe Hyundai will get the largest piece of cake...more

Reno Takes A Ride Into the Future with Hydrogen Fuel-Cell Buses

Reno Takes A Ride Into the Future with Hydrogen Fuel-Cell Buses

The Nevada Globe Staff | December 30, 2023

Bucking against rising fuel costs and carbon emissions, the Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) of Washoe County is pushing the pedal on a cleaner future with hydrogen fuel-cell buses. After years of experience with electric-battery buses, the RTC is now betting on a technology they believe is even more advanced – and the first two sleek, new fuel-cell buses just rolled into town.

“These hydrogen buses are pretty cool,” says RTC Government Affairs Officer Paul Nelson, his enthusiasm palpable. “They’re electric, just like the ones we already have, but they don’t need overnight charging. They’ve got fuel cells that generate electricity on the go, giving them a whopping 300-mile range, compared to just 100 for our battery buses.”

This leap forward isn’t just about convenience. The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) recognizes the game-changing potential of hydrogen, backing the RTC with a $6.8 million grant for these initial two buses and another $8.8 million on the way, paving the path for eight more by the end of 2024.

Beyond increased range, hydrogen boasts scalability. While every battery bus demands its own charger, a single hydrogen fueling station can fuel a fleet of 10 to 50 buses! RTC is already laying the groundwork, setting up a temporary station and importing hydrogen from Sacramento as they plan for a permanent, centralized hub...more

First Hydrogen Buses Arrive to Reno

2news.com | Josh Meny | December 29, 2023

The Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) of Washoe County has been investing in alternative fuel buses since 2014 to reduce carbon emissions and combat rising fuel costs. Currently, more than a quarter of RTC's 70 bus fleet is composed of electric-battery buses.

However, the RTC has discovered that electric-battery buses have some limitations that hinder their effectiveness. Therefore, the RTC is now investing in hydrogen fuel-cell buses, which are considered superior technology. The first two hydrogen fuel cell buses arrived last week to RTC's Sutro Street location...

....RTC states that hydrogen buses are also safer than regular gas buses. The drivers and mechanics of these new buses will train on virtual reality headsets funded by the Federal government. "The administration is really pushing for more sustainable transportation, and hydrogen fuel-cell buses do that. Having this federal money available is critical for the RTC because we're not a very large operation. If we didn't have federal funding, we would have to use our local fuel tax dollars. So, this allows us to use that money in other ways," said Government Affairs Officer Paul Nelson...more

China will deploy 116,900 FCEVs by 2025, significantly surpassing the 50K target in China's national hydrogen strategy

Progresses and challenges of China’s hydrogen sector in 2023

ChinaHydrogen.substack.com | Jian Wu | Dec 28, 2023

2023 is a remarkable year for China’s booming low carbon hydrogen industry as we saw inspiring progresses across the value chain, as well as in the policy building and implementation.

As more and more stakeholders realized the role of green hydrogen will be crucial for China to achieve deep decarbonization while ensuring domestic energy security and boosting domestic economic development, policy makers are ramping up to establish institutional foundations for China’s hydrogen economy.

As of December 2023, 27 out of 31 provinces in China have provided their provincial hydrogen strategies and specified their targets through 2025, some provinces even specified targets for 2030 and 2035. According to these provincial level hydrogen strategies, altogether, China will deploy 116,900 FCEVs by 2025, significantly surpassing the 50,000 FCEVs target in China’s national hydrogen strategy. 8 provinces establish a target to deploy 10,000 FCEVs by 2025, including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangdong, Hebei, Shandong, Shanxi, Shaanxi, and Jiangsu province.

The deployment of FCEVs is accelerating. For the first eleven month of 2023, the sales volume of FCEVs in China reached 3,996 units, up 44.8% yoy, according to China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM). Heavy duty trucks rank No.1 among all the applications as current subsidy policies have a tendency favoring more powerful vehicles, indicating that China’s domestic FCEVs market is still a policy-driven market.

We also witness that over 400 hydrogen refueling stations have been established in all provinces except Tibet with another 39 in construction by the end of 2023. Guangdong province holds the leading position with over 60 hydrogen refueling stations followed by Shandong, Hebei, Shanghai, Zhejiang, Shanxi, and Hubei provinces with 20-30 refueling stations in operation. However, compared with the capacity building targets set in provincial hydrogen strategies or implementations plans, we identified that most provinces may fall behind their schedule...more

"another 39 in construction by the end of 2023"

California couldn't even build 39 stations in the last ~5 years. Pathetic.

While Americans argue and bicker endlessly about whether hydrogen should even be a part of the global energy transition or not - China is making hydrogen work right now as you read this. In the past 9 years or so they have now become the worldwide leader in hydrogen tech. Nice Job America!

Plug switches on Amazon's first on-site electrolyser in Colorado

RenewablesNow.com | Martina Markosyan | Dec 28, 2023

US hydrogen technology company Plug Power Inc (NASDAQ: PLUG) has switched on the first on-site electrolyser system owned by Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN), a 1-MW machine located at the US e-commerce giant's fulfilment centre in Aurora, Colorado.

The proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyser is producing low-carbon hydrogen which will be compressed on-site and stored in a gaseous storage tank. Its output will be used to fuel more than 225 hydrogen fuel cell-powered forklift trucks at the site, having an overall capacity to support up to 400 such vehicles.

Plug was in charge of the design, installation, commissioning and maintenance services for the electrolyser and the storage.

Plug and Amazon have partnered on the deployment of more than 17,000 fuel cells to replace batteries in forklifts in more than 80 fulfilment centres in North America. For most of the sites, the hydrogen is produced elsewhere and transported by trucks to an on-site storage and dispensing system....more
