UK's Hornsea 2: North Sea wind farm claims title of world's largest -- BBC

The wind farm has 165 turbines

Hornsea 2: North Sea wind farm claims title of world's largest

By Jonah Fisher | August 31, 2022

...The Hornsea 2 project can generate enough electricity to power about 1.3 million homes - that's enough for a city the size of Manchester.

A decade ago renewables made up just 11% of the UK's energy mix. By 2021 it was 40%, with offshore wind the largest component...

...Hornsea 2 has taken the title of "world's largest" from its neighbour Hornsea 1. It covers an area about four and half time the size of Liverpool. With even larger projects under construction nearby in the North Sea it's unlikely its title will last long. The Dogger Bank wind farm, which when fully built will be able to power 6m homes, is due to start coming on stream next year.

Each of the 165 turbines in Hornsea 2 stands about 200m tall from the sea level to the top of the 81m blades. Mr Harnett says a single rotation takes six seconds and provides enough energy to power a home for a day. more

Nation poised to become global leader in hydrogen vehicle industry

It's NOT the US (but it could have been)

China Daily, August 29, 2022

The hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle sector is gathering momentum in China, the world's largest hydrogen producer, as companies are making breakthroughs and local governments are introducing supportive policies.

By 2025, China will have about 50,000 fuel-cell vehicles on its roads, according to a plan jointly released in March by the National Development and Reform Commission and the National Energy Administration.

"The actual figure will be far beyond that", said Xie Chaopeng, vice-president of FTXT, a subsidiary of Great Wall Motors that specializes in hydrogen fuel cell technology.

..."Our products will be superior in some respects in 2023, and our products scheduled to hit the market in 2025 will be at the same level with Hyundai and Toyota," he said. more

Shanghai hydrogen moves into high gear

LIU YUKUN | China Daily | 2022-08-27

Shanghai announced on Friday it will establish a regional hydrogen pipeline network and a national trading platform, amid a slew of supportive policies to speed up the industry's development.

The move is part of the country's concerted efforts to reduce carbon footprint and meet emission targets, experts said.

The city had already pledged to build about 70 hydrogen fueling stations and have its size of hydrogen industrial chain surpass 100 billion yuan ($14.6 billion) by 2025.

Further efforts are still needed to increase the use of new energy in place of fossil fuels for the generation of hydrogen power. Experts said hydrogen power generated using new energy can help achieve China's green commitment...more

The 2020's will be known in the Hydrogen universe as the years that China came to dominate the Hydrogen industry, much like the 2000's when China took over the solar industry. And Americans watched BOTH- you'd think they would have learned something besides how to perform enhanced drone strikes on farmers and their families during the last 20 years. Pathetic.

Green Future! India's First Indigenous Hydrogen Fuel Cell Bus Unveiled In Maharashtra's Pune

Green Future! India's First Indigenous Hydrogen Fuel Cell Bus Unveiled In Maharashtra's Pune

The Logical Indian | Maharashtra, 23 Aug 2022

Union minister of state for science and technology Dr Jitendra Singh unveiled India's first indigenous hydrogen fuel bus developed by CSIR and KPIT ltd. At the event, the minister said that the initiative would boost PM Modi's 'hydrogen vision", targeting to make India self-reliant to meet clean energy goals and create employment in the sector.

He said that if a diesel bus is compared to a hydrogen bus, it typically emits 100 tons of co2 per annum on long-distance routes, and there are millions of buses across the country, reports The Times of India. Also, a hydrogen fuel cell truck's operational cost is competitively lower than diesel buses which could bring about revolutionary changes across the nation.

Advantages Of Hydrogen Fuel Cell

The primary advantage of hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV) is that they produce zero tailpipe emissions and only emit water vapour and warm air. Another advantage is that they are more efficient than internal combustion engine vehicles since the refuelling time makes them more practical than battery-powered electric vehicles for public transportation purposes.

The hydrogen fuel-powered vehicle can be refilled in a few minutes, nearly as fast as fossil fuel can fill an internal combustion engine. Even with the fastest charging technologies, charging a battery-powered electric bus could take hours...more

The world's first hydrogen-powered passenger trains are here

Source: CNN

CNN 24th August 2022

The future of environmentally friendly travel might just be here -- and it's Germany that's leading the charge, with the first ever rail line to be entirely run on hydrogen-powered trains, starting from Wednesday.

Fourteen hydrogen trains powered by fuel cell propulsion will exclusively run on the route in Bremervörde, Lower Saxony. The 93 million euro ($92.3 million) deal has been struck by state subsidiary Landesnahverkehrsgesellschaft Niedersachsen (LVNG), the owners of the railway, and Alstom, builders of the Coradia iLint trains. The Elbe-Weser Railways and Transport Company (EVB), which will operate the trains, and gas and engineering company Linde, are also part of the project.

The trains, five of which which debut Wednesday, will gradually replace the 15 diesel trains that currently run on the route, with all 14 running exclusively by the end of the year. Just 1 kilo of hydrogen fuel can do the same as around 4.5 kilos of diesel.

The trains are emissions-free and low-noise, with only steam and condensed water issuing from the exhaust. They have a range of 1,000 kilometers (621 miles), meaning they can run for an entire day on the network on a single tank of hydrogen. A hydrogen filling station has already been established on the route. The trains can go at a maximum of 140 kph, or 87mph, though regular speeds on the line are much less, between 80-120 kph...more

Over 270 hydrogen refueling stations built across China, the most in the world

People's Daily | August 14, 2022

The National Energy Administration reported on Saturday that by the end of June 2022, more than 270 hydrogen refueling stations had been built nationwide. In the first half of 2022, effective investment in the energy sector continued to increase, and the total amount of investment rose 15.9 percent year on year.

Statistics from the China Hydrogen Alliance also show that as of the end of 2021, there was a total of 659 operational hydrogen refueling stations in the world. Among the countries that have such stations, China has the most.

China is the largest hydrogen producer in the world, with annual output reaching 33 million tons. China has mastered the main technologies needed in the processes of hydrogen preparation, storage, and transportation, hydrogenation, hydrogen fuel cell production, and system integration.

According to the country's Medium-and Long-Term Plan for the Development of Hydrogen Energy Industry (2021-2035), the number of fuel cell vehicles will be about 50,000 by 2025, and a number of new hydrogen refueling stations will be built...more

Number of hydrogen stations in China in 2016: Zero

From ZERO to 270 in 6 years- and they are just getting started.

So those who say it can't be done are, at best, hopeless defeatists. Like those in the 1950's who said the US could NEVER build an interstate highway system.

An ex-NASA rover engineer tells us why 'technology agnosticism' will save the planet

And why Elon Musk is wrong in saying hydrogen is 'dumb'.

Introducing nuGenTM Solution, Anglo American's Zero Emissions Haulage Solution

...Today, First Mode has just announced a merger between itself and Anglo American after a successful partnership between the two in building the world's largest zero-emission haul truck. It's part of an orchestral collaboration that saw First Mode fit a massive 2MW hydrogen fuel cell and lithium-ion battery powerplant into Anglo American's 490-ton nuGen mining truck. And it's one of many projects First Mode has undertaken on its mission to decarbonize industry.

Space engineering principles to save the planet by

Voorhees learned his trade from the pioneering first generation of solar system exploration scientists and engineers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. He joined NASA as an intern in the mid-90s just as many of them were coming to the end of their illustrious careers. By the early 2000s, he was a lead mechanical engineer on the Mars Curiosity rover program.

Two of Voorhees' mentors, Bill Lehmann and Frank Locatell, were instrumental in some of the most iconic robotic spacecraft missions in history, including Voyager, Galileo, and Cassini. Though Voorhees idolized many of his superiors, he eventually realized that, when they started "they didn't know what they were doing either." The most valuable lesson he took from them, he says, was to rely on "good first principles" and to "always search for the simplest solution to a problem."

snip...
Hydrogen versus electric is 'asking the wrong question'

Key to First Mode's success so far, Voorhees says, is the concept of "technology agnosticism", which flies in the face of companies such as Tesla, whose CEO Elon Musk is an absolutist when it comes to the debate over hydrogen and electric vehicles — Musk recently called the idea of hydrogen cars "staggeringly dumb".....more

"It reminds me of the solar versus wind argument that happened with renewable energy in the late 90s and early 2000s. Like, which one of these is the right one to win? It turns out both were really good. And I feel the same way here. I look at them as complementary technologies. And we use both." -- First Mode’s Chris Voorhees

Eco-friendly delivery service in Venice launched using hydrogen-powered boats

Nippon Express Italia launches eco-friendly delivery service in Venice using hydrogen-powered boats

Vishal Singh | August 10, 2022

Nippon Express Italia, a group company of Nippon Express, announced on Wednesday that it has launched an eco-friendly delivery service in Venice, Italy, that uses hydrogen-powered boats. Nippon Express is a Japan-based logistics company that was established back in 1872.

The move comes as companies operating within the EU are quickening their decarbonisation efforts in order to meet the European Union’s target of lowering greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55 per cent from 1990 levels no later than 2030.

The Group identified addressing climate change as one of its material issues and is working to reduce CO2 emissions in its operations. The firm is also developing goods and services that assist its clients in reducing their own CO2 emissions in order to realise its long-term vision of becoming a “logistics company with a strong presence in the global market.”

...A hydrogen-powered boat uses hydrogen as a source of energy to drive an electric motor. Hydrogen is transformed into electricity in fuel cells by the onboard hydrogen fuel system, which takes hydrogen from storage cylinders. A battery pack receives this energy and uses it to power a motor...more

California DMV accuses Tesla of falsely advertising Autopilot and Full Self-Driving features

Source: LA Times

RUSS MITCHELL AUG. 5, 2022

The California Department of Motor Vehicles has accused Tesla of false advertising in its promotion of the company’s signature Autopilot and Full Self-Driving technologies.

The agency alleges the electric-car maker misled customers with advertising language on its website describing Autopilot and Full Self-Driving technologies as more capable than they actually are.

The company “made or disseminated statements that are untrue or misleading, and not based on facts,” the DMV said in a pair of complaints filed with the state Office of Administrative Hearings on July 28.

The DMV complaints point to the very names of the technologies, as well as other “misleading” language such as the following, which appears on the Tesla website’s Autopilot page:

Florida Family Discovers That Used Electric Vehicles Are a Risk Not Worth Assuming

Autoevolution.com | 18 Jul 2022

The story is one that we’ve heard countless times before. The car was wonderful, and the family loved it until it stopped working. From then on, chaos prevailed, and the outcome might be that they will never try an electric vehicle ever again. That’s such a shame because electric cars are genuinely great. But for many models launched in the early days of electrification, problems with the battery could send the car to a junkyard.

The Li-Ion battery is the single most expensive component of an electric car. This is why many fear buying an EV. The worst nightmare came true for a Florida family after buying their 17-year-old daughter a used 2014 Ford Focus EV. The Focus is a compact hatchback that started its career in 2011, well before Tesla Model S began production in 2012. Wait, what? That’s right, Ford had a leg in electrification, and the Focus EV wasn’t even the first: the Ranger EV was built between 1997 and 2002.

That didn’t help the Blue Oval build the better EV. While we’ve heard no early adopters of the Tesla EVs complaining about battery life, it was a different story with other brands. Nissan Leaf owners particularly have a grudge against electric vehicles. Now, we can extend this to Ford Focus EV owners. The Florida family says the Ford Focus Electric they bought had 60,000 miles and worked great for about six months. After that, problems mounted.

“It was fine at first,” teenager Avery Siwinski said to KVUE. “I loved it so much. It was small and quiet and cute. And all the sudden it stopped working. The Ford dealership had advised us that we could replace the battery. It would only cost $14,000.”...more:

Would you put a new >$10,000 replacement part in a 6 year old car?
