California fire crews use SIX THOUSAND gallons of water to extinguish burning Tesla Model S...

Source: Daily Mail

Firefighters used 6,000 gallons of water to extinguish a Tesla Model S that spontaneously burst into flames on a busy highway outside of Sacramento on Saturday.

The driver, who was not injured, was on Highway 50 in Rancho Cordova at around 3pm when smoke started to come out from the front of the car.

...Fires generated from electric vehicles can be especially hazardous, as they generate over 100 organic chemicals including some potentially fatal toxic gasses like carbon monoxide and hydrogen cyanide.

Tesla batteries may be at a higher risk of combusting due to the lithium-ion technology they use, which is a relatively new introduction to the auto industry. Lithium-ion batteries charge faster but can rise to extraordinary temperatures if damaged...

India to base entire economy on hydrogen

India to base entire economy on hydrogen

Bogdan Avramuta | 25 January 2023

The Indian Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has released a document at the beginning of the year which lays out a detailed plan for the country to follow in its quest to achieve the “global hub” status within the green hydrogen and derivatives industry, in addition to becoming energy independent. India can achieve this by reshuffling its entire economy in order to make space for green hydrogen and ensure both demand and supply co-exist in what could turn India into a wealthy export powerhouse.

In order for the Mission to be accomplished, India aims to produce at least 5 million metric tons (MMT) of green hydrogen per annum by 2030, with the potential to reach 10 MMT per year. The Mission will also support the replacement of fossil fuels and fossil fuel based feedstock with renewable energy and feedstocks based on green hydrogen, production of green ammonia, blending hydrogen in gas distribution systems, green steel manufacturing and the decarbonization of the mobility, shipping and aviation sectors. Moreover, the country aims to also become a world leader in manufacturing electrolyzers.

The entire Mission is being backed by an initial funding approved by the Indian Cabinet worth $2.4 billion in the form of subsidies. Most of the funding ($2.11 billion) will go towards two distinct financial incentives: one for the production of green hydrogen and the other for the domestic manufacturing of electrolyzers....

...The entire Mission is seen as a two-part job with Phase 1 starting now and spanning over the short term until 2026 and Phase 2 spanning over the following four years until 2030. Phase 1 will initially tackle the sectors that already use hydrogen in order for these to transition to the green version of the gas as soon as possible and reduce emissions. It will then look to indigenize the value chain by investing into pilot projects that will create and sustain the demand. At the same time work will commence on establishing a framework of regulations and standards to facilitate the growth of the sector and enable harmonization and engagement with international norms. Lastly, driving the cost of green hydrogen down will enable the second phase of the Mission.

Phase 2 will eye more industrial activities switch from fossil fuels to green hydrogen like refineries, fertilizer manufacturing, steel, mobility, shipping and aviation...more

UK Wind Farms Are Producing Too Much Energy

City A.M | Jan 18, 2023

National Grid forked out £82m to operators of wind farms last month to constrain supplies and reduce output amid blustery conditions, to prevent the UK’s energy network from being overwhelmed.

This is on top of £122m it has paid out over the first 11 months of 2022 – as part of £1.34bn it spent to manage supplies last year.

Contrary to popular perception, wind turbines do not thrive in stormy or overly windy conditions – as National Grid typically tells producers to reduce output to stop power spiking across the grid and to reduce pressure on the network.

The latest data on constraints from National Grid’s electricity system operator (NGESO) comes amid reports of record wind power generation this month.

NGESO has revealed that wind power generated record amounts of energy last Tuesday, topping 21 gigawatts (GW) for the first time ever...more

Yale School of the Environment: Fossil Fuels Received $5.9 Trillion In Subsidies in 2020: Report

Fossil Fuels Received $5.9 Trillion In Subsidies in 2020, Report Finds

e360.Yale.edu | OCTOBER 6, 2021

Coal, oil, and natural gas received $5.9 trillion in subsidies in 2020 — or roughly $11 million every minute — according to a new analysis from the International Monetary Fund.

Explicit subsidies accounted for only 8 percent of the total. The remaining 92 percent were implicit subsidies, which took the form of tax breaks or, to a much larger degree, health and environmental damages that were not priced into the cost of fossil fuels, according to the analysis.

“Underpricing leads to overconsumption of fossil fuels, which accelerates global warming and exacerbates domestic environmental problems including losses to human life from local air pollution and excessive and road congestion and accidents,” authors wrote. “This has long been recognized, but globally countries are still a long way from getting energy prices right.”

The report found that 47 percent of natural gas and 99 percent of coal is priced at less than half its true cost, and that just five countries — China, the United States, Russia, India, and Japan — account for two-thirds of subsidies globally. All five countries belong to the G20, which in 2009 agreed to phase out “inefficient” fossil fuel subsidies “over the medium term.”...more

Hydrogen-powered planes take off with startup's test flight

Source: MIT Technology Review

January 19, 2023 -In a record trip for low-carbon aviation, a startup has completed a test flight of a 19-seat aircraft powered in part by hydrogen fuel cells. It’s the largest plane that ZeroAvia, a leader in developing hydrogen-electric systems for planes, has tested in the air to date.

The flight took off from Cotswold Airport in the UK and lasted about 10 minutes altogether. During the flight, the plane’s left engines were powered by a combination of hydrogen fuel cells and batteries, while the right side relied on the fossil fuel kerosene.

Aviation accounts for about 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions, and the industry is growing quickly. While airlines and some industry groups have pledged to cut emissions to net-zero by 2050, the demands of flying are difficult to achieve without fossil fuels.

Hydrogen fuel cells represent one possible route that some companies hope can help reduce emissions from the aviation industry, but to make significant cuts, the technology would need to be scaled up to power relatively large aircraft.
