We lost a legendary Democrat here in Los Angeles today. RIP Roz Wyman.

Rosalind Wyman was (and remains) the youngest person ever elected to the LA City Council, in 1953 when she was only 22 years old. She represented the 5th District for 12 years.

She overcame sexism and anti-Semitism to win the seat and she was among the progressive voices who helped turn Los Angeles from a city dominated by conservatives to the liberal bastion it is today.

She was instrumental in bringing the Dodgers to LA (sorry Brooklynites) and helped secure the 1960 Democratic convention for our fair city.

She headed up Dianne Feinstein's initial Senate campaign and chaired the DNC Convention in 1984.

“Roz was a force of nature: breaking down barriers for women in California politics, while forging new ways to bring people together through politics, the arts, and baseball,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said in a statement.

The obits will focus on her role in bringing the Dodgers to LA, but those of us who follow local politics know her legacy is much (much) greater than baseball.

We owe her a great deal. She helped transform the politics of this city.

Roz Wyman was 92.
