Citizen voter challenges, once an obscure practice, have transformed into a mass movement in Georgia, with conservative activists challenging hundreds of thousands of voter registrations in the last several years. Often, the waves of voter challenges coincide with competitive, high-profile elections, with election conspiracy theorists using complaints of rampant voter fraud to cast doubt on election results. Voters of color — and Black voters in particular — have been disproportionately impacted by these vast disenfranchisement campaigns.

And voting rights experts say a newly-passed election law, known as SB 189, is likely to make the problem worse.

Legal experts, political advisors and scholars from across the political spectrum are warning that a second term for Donald Trump could mean effectively ending democracy in America, a threat they say calls for voters putting aside their policy differences to defeat the threat of autocracy in November.

The warning came from bipartisan group of experts who gathered at New York University on Tuesday to discuss the impact a second Trump term would have on the country. The event, “Autocracy in America: a Warning and a Response,” was planned before President Joe Biden announced he was stepping down as the Democratic nominee, a decision that speakers said had upended the race for the White House.

“We’ve gone from age vs. autocracy to dictatorship vs. democracy as the theme of the next 119 days,” Norm Eisen, a legal analyst at CNN, said of Biden’s announcement.

In its brief to the justices, the Biden administration offers a few persuasive reasons why the Court should stay its hand. But, frankly, after Nebraska, it is difficult to determine whether legal arguments play any role in the student loans cases the Supreme Court takes. The decision in Nebraska was so egregious — so lacking in respect for statutory text — that it’s far from clear whether any student loans plan created by this Democratic administration can receive a fair hearing in this GOP-controlled Supreme Court.

Rumours persist that tape exists of Trump using the N-word during his time on The Apprentice, the hit NBC TV show that propelled him towards politics, though none have emerged. Omarosa Manigault Newman, a Black contestant, has said she has heard such a tape. Trump denies it.

Since winning the Republican nomination ... in 2016, through four years in the White House and in his third... campaign, Trump has repeatedly used racist language and has faced accusations of race-baiting. He has vehemently denied all such accusations.

The 2024 election, Harris and her supporters argue, is a choice between the United States continuing as a democratic republic under a Democratic administration in 2025 or sliding into authoritarianism under... Trump.

The Never Trumper warned that if Trump returns to the White House in 2025, "What we will see is corruption on a scale like we've never seen before in this country."

Ben-Ghiat warned, "It is MAGA dictatorship or American democracy. It is repression — the iron (fist) coming down on us — (or) freedom. I've seen what happens to societies when corrupt leaders and their allies gain power based on division or hatred, and Project 2025 is a recipe for mass chaos, abuses of power and dysfunction in government."

Republican Attorney General Andrew Bailey has been fighting Dunn’s release.

Steven Puro, professor emeritus of political science at St. Louis University, said Bailey is in a highly competitive race for the attorney general position with the primary quickly approaching on Aug. 6.

“Bailey is trying to show that he is, quote, ‘tough on crime,’ which is a very important Republican conservative position,” he said. “Clearly, he’s angering members of the judicial system that he will have to argue before in the future. But he’s making the strategic notion that he needs to get his name before the voters and try to use that to win the primary election.”

In a disheartening move that echoes Tractor Supply Company’s recent actions of stepping away from Pride events, John Deere, the iconic farm equipment maker, has abandoned its diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, effectively turning its back on its Black,LGBTQ+, and women employees and customers. The Tuesday announcement states that the company will no longer support “social orcultural awareness” events and will audit its training materials to ensure they are free of “socially motivated messages.”

On February 8, 2021, the Anti-Defamation League's (ADL) Los Angeles branch published an op-ed headlined "The Link Between Donald Trump and Antisemitism."

In an interview with Salon's Chauncey DeVega published on July 12, Sharon Nazarian — the ADL's former senior vice president of international affairs — detailed the role antisemitism plays in the global anti-democracy movement she considers Trump and the MAGA movement a part of.
