To be fair - Old Harold was Norwegian by birth - and at one time also the Norwegian King under the name Harald Haaråde (Harald the hard Ruler, as he was rather brutal to subject his lesser ones) William The Concur was a normanner - another who from the age of Gange Rolv was made duke of Normandy (and Gange rolv was also a Norwegian who was given the land, and the title of Duke, by the french King, in return for protecting the french Kingdom from the vikings. Who they did - and even managed to get their own married in to the royal family at one point... And was promised the kingdom of England (this wa long before the United Kingdom was made possible, and England was a rather poor parts of Europe)
But in all, William the bastard (as he also was known, as he was born outside of marriage, something that was BAD by the standards of the age.. (even though many dukes and even kings had more kids outside of marriage than in marriage!) got the upper hand, as he had the more advanced army - and was more cunning in playing the game. And he was maybe even more stubborn to get what he wanted than Harold was...
And as many english says " its 1066 and all that"... The year when England shanged more than it was doing since the romans left the island to fend for themself... And a whole new world, the continental world was coming to England..
