In reply to the discussion: Excellent take on the Roseanne reboot [View all]misanthrope
(7,411 posts)21. Great critique from the NYT
although the underlying mechanism is chiefly ignored in its content. Every decision involving major corporate entertainment entities is about money. It rules all.
It's highly apparent ABC made a cynical decision to exploit a niche of Trump supporters who would rush like lemmings to this material due to their persecution complex. Crazy-ass, bigotry-laced, conspiracy-addled Roseanne Barr proved the perfect vehicle for their purposes.
The questions about why the other actors signed on, those whose voiced personal opinions seemingly run counter to an administration warming up to white separatism and authoritarianism is a good one. Why indeed?
Those who played the Connor kids aren't exactly rolling in dough these days. Sarah Gilbert is the one who remains most active.
Goodman and Metcalf are more notable cyphers. They are both still working with regularity, Goodman most of all. Perhaps they feel the press of age and financial security feels more tenuous than ever with the specter of illness more prominent.
Maybe their longtime gratitude to Barr loomed large. Maybe ABC and the production company just met their price for swallowing pride. Maybe their convictions weren't all that deep.
Or maybe they were never as bright as we wished.
Whatever it is, in the long run it won't matter to me anyway. It's very, very rare sitcoms entertain me and Barr's initial run failed to captivate my interest. I don't expect that to suddenly change.

Never found her funny. More like "funny." I'd tune in if it was Goodman and Metcalf.

Also my concern, any amount of normalization is bad and must be rejected.
