I correspond regularly with someone in Britain and the subject of Trump comes up often. They do understand and know we aren't all crazy. Every country gets a really off-the-wall leader at one time or another, kind of like that one insane relationship that seems so out of character, but your friends understand, knowing it does not reflect who you truly are and it will pass.
During the Bush years, my daughter played online games with people in Europe and she would chat with them in effort to find out how they viewed Americans. She was reassured to discover that they knew Bush did represent most Americans. If anything, they were sympathetic.
