compared to any risk that the country faces of a war.

Germany focuses more on getting along and living in harmony with its neighbors and allies in NATO.

Germany doesn't have a lot of territory outside Germany to defend or conquer. NATO membership brings it and other countries, some small like Belgium or Austria or a number of other countries harmony with its neighbors and peace.
