Or it's more of an old school "learn your place" kind of attitude

Anti-feminist women have said similar things to discourage women from attending college or taking some manual labor jobs.

On a similar but unrelated note, the violent racial hostility towards H-1Bs has discouraged many US born Indian-Americans from touching the IT field with 10 foot pole.

Although as a society, there are efforts these days to encourage women to consider STEM careers as an option because it was historically discouraged.
