The way I usually frame the difference between Democratic Party and Republican Party is that Democrats believe that government has a role to play and a responsibility in helping the most vulnerable people in the country to have equitable access to the opportunities and benefits this country has to offer. Democrats see government as a way to curb the excesses of the wealthy and powerful, a counter weight. Republicans see government as the guardian of the status quo, where the owners of capital and property have the protection of their right to accumulate. They use government to enforce the old social order where for the most part, White, Christian values are promoted and other viewpoints are excluded or minimized.

Of course you will never hear a Republican state that, but they throw around phrases like "Personal Responsibility", "Family Values", "Religious Liberty" and others which are basically code for the exclusion of populations that are non-conforming.
