In reply to the discussion: Reminder: Mazie Hirono has Stage 4 kidney cancer while fighting for us. [View all]SunSeeker
(51,550 posts)53. Yes, I remember too. She had just had surgery to remove a rib her kidney cancer had spread to.
Yet she flew to DC to vote, and to implore her colleagues to keep the ACA.
As the Time article I link to states:
Hirono has done all this while battling Stage 4 cancer, diagnosed in May 2017. In July she offered an emotional plea to protect President Obamas health care law from a Republican-led repeal. Its hard for me to talk about this. I think you can tell. Give me a moment, Hirono said in a speech from the Senate floor, delivered without prepared remarks. As her colleagues watched in silence, Hirono described being born at home in rural Japan, her sisters death from pneumonia because the family didnt have access to hospitals and a childhood spent living paycheck to paycheck. She then turned to the present. I am fighting kidney cancer, she said. And Im just so grateful that I had health insurance so that I could concentrate on the care that I needed rather than how the heck I was going to afford the care that was going to probably save my life.
Very few people heard that speech. The media was more focused on McCain...and whatever crazy shit Trump happened to be saying at that moment.

OP
A lot of people don't know. Mazie has not gotten the media recognition she should.

I was only thinking yesterday that she's looking fantastic for someone heading to 71 next month.
