They focused on it at the same time as voter ID's and gin up hysteria about conspiracies of illegitimate voting that there's no evidence of. It's the same reason they attacked ACORN. They're a minority party and the moneyed interests that back them want them to enact policies that an actual majority of people wouldn't vote for.
