Decide on a giving budget. Now sort the causes. Which ones are you really, really concerned about? Fine. Donate to them (if you're not sure, tuck the begging letter away for when you have more money to give and decide again then)

Keep a list so you know who got what and when--they will never stop asking for more. (Not being mean, just realistic--I've been the check-writer in the family for more than 40 years)

And yeah....why the HELL isn't the government taking care of our vets? Why does there have to be "wounded warrior" funds and the like??? Or environmental defense and park support??
