(11,562 posts)One of my favourite examples of famed British dry wit and understatement came a a Rolls dealership that was a client of a friend of mine's employer. He happened to be there when this happened.
Apparently, this Rolls had a rattle in the door and there were two distinct types of Brits in evidence to deal with it. One very working class, who was doing the fix, and one very public-school, "I have an important job at Rolls Royce" type, complete with 3-piece suit and a brolly.
The work was difficult, because it had to be done "blind"...all by feel. The mechanic was getting increasingly frustrated and blurted out something along the line of "How is anyone supposed to work on this shite?"
Mr. Suit had been impassive the whole time, including ignoring the curses that were getting louder and more frequent, right up to that question, at which point he felt compelled to speak. He leaned over and said, very flatly and quietly "It was never meant to be worked on, old man."
