(2,595 posts)For some anecdotal information, my 85+ mother had never had any problems with high cholesterol, but she did have significant cognitive issues the last five to seven years of her life. Her doctor had told me her cholesterol levels were those of a person in his early twenties who had never been allowed to eat junk food on a regular basis, so when he prescribed simvastatin for her, I balked. He told me that the statin drugs are indicated where cognitive impairment is present. As far as I could see, it did nothing positive for her and it made her muscles ache and weakened them to the point that she required a wheelchair to move around after about eight or nine months on the drug. Frankly, after her issues with a statin I will refuse to accept a prescription for them for myself and I would seriously warn others about using them, especially if they aren't at an advanced age, and if they start to have issues with muscle weakness or pain to notify their prescribing physician STAT and stop using them.
