8. Interesting that they choose to spell it that way. Not even trying to disguise the origin.

Except for in French and English, which spell it "Europe," most of the rest of the continent uses the Latin "Europa," except the Slavic languages, led by Russian, which uses the "v." In Russian, the "e" is palatalized, so Европа is pronounced "Yevropa" in Russian, but the origin of the spelling is clear.

In Russian class, we used to cite a nonsense rhyme to the tune of Frère Jacques in Russian:

Артишоки, артишоки
И миндаль, и миндаль,
Не растут в Европе, не растут в Европе
Очень жаль, oчень жаль

"Artishawki, artishawki
I mindal', i mindal'
Nye rastoot v'Yevropye, nye rastoot v'Yevropye
Awchen' zhal', awchen' zhal'

"Artichokes, artickokes
And the almond, and the almond
Don't grow in Europe, don't grow in Europe
What a shame, what a shame"

(They do grow there, of course, but like I said, it's a nonsense rhyme)
