9. This is disturbing.

In the military justice system, a decision to place an accused in pretrial confinement is not made lightly because there is no bond provision. At least back in my day, the command decision for pretrial confinement would be reviewed by a military magistrate. I cannot recall hearing of an occasion of a higher level of command - must less the President - overturning the decision.

The President's intervention in this case runs a serious risk of telegraphing a view of the overall case to the court martial (the jury in the civilian system). I know of nothing to be done about it but this stinks.
