It’s also worth noting that the next election wasn’t good at all for republican senators who voted for conviction. Republicans had been on a winning streak in the senate (with ‘88 being the last election that they had lost even a single seat)... yet they lost four. And that despite theoretically winning the White House. Democrats actually took back control of the Senate for a short time.

You can reasonably argue differences between the two cases, but not that impeachment wasn’t a disaster for republicans. It would be a risky move with almost zero chance of removing him.
