...I feel exactly that way. I did not support the impeachment of Bill Clinton ...because I felt he'd been pushed into the situation that finally caused him to break the law. Trump on the other hand, like another poster pointed out, has been breaking the law his entire life and is a lawless president as Rep. Swalwell put it so accurately last night.
Since I posed the question yesterday, Trump has pushed the envelope even further, challenging Congressional subpoenas, and ordering Treasury to stall on the request for his tax records. How far will his actions go to further undermine the foundations of this Democracy? Swalwell said for the good of his party, if not the good of the nation, Trump should do the right thing and stop fighting the subpoenas, stop claiming executive privilege regarding testimony already publicly produced in the Mueller report. Stop slowing down the process the Constitution charges Congress to carry out. But Swalwell forgot: Trump doesn't care about the Republican party, nor does he care about this nation.
Trump is no asset to the Republicans, but he is holding the cards, and the Republicans in Congress will continue to provide cover for him. Only the Democrats in Congress can force his hand and let the nation see how truly lawless he is--as if he hasn't provided ample evidence publicly. I just hope there are enough ethical Americans to see him for what he is when he's forced to show his full hand. I don't think we can count on Republicans to convict him in the Senate. But Democrats shouldn't allow Trump to hold them under his thumb the way he has Republicans. We should do what is right for our nation and not worry about political expediency. That IS why the Democrats took control of the House. If they don't show they have the backbone to hold this administration accountable, they won't likely hold the House.
