(31,261 posts)to put in liquid. I just used pineapple juice instead of water. That takes the edge off as I chugged it. I drink a few sips of water once the taste of it caught up, but if I had it to do over again now, I would have drank pineapple juice that I had set aside in the refrigerator. You can make the solution the day before you need to drink it and put it in the refrigerator, as BkackAdder pointed out, it tastes a lot better if it is cold.
My experience was that about a glass and a half was all that I needed, once it start clearing you out, it clears you out. You will initially pass solids, then a mixture of solids and liquid and by late night you will be passing liquids. What I realized that I could do is pay attention to the smell of the liquid, if you smell feces in it, you are not cleaned out enough. But if you smell your empty gut with no feces smell, you are clean and can stop drinking the stuff and keep passing out liquid, at that point you can also go to drinking just water or a mixture of water and apple or pineapple juice, just don't drink too much because you may not be able to clear it all and it may come out of you on the exam table. Don't worry about smelling what is coming out, you will smell everything without trying. If you have ever smelled hotdogs that have natural casings on them, that is about how your empty gut smells.
My procedure was around 11:30am, I stopped drinking liquid at around 7am and just passed out what was inside me, I was told by the nurse that I did not pass liquid, I was clean and dry, she said a lot of people aren't dry. I gave myself around 4 1/2 hours to get the final liquid inside me to what the medical team say.
I suggest that you take off an hour early from work on the prep night. Chug down the first drink of the prep solution at around 7-8pm, don't eat before unless it is candy such as lemon drops or pineapple candy. I chug a big swig of solution after the first glass every hour until around 11pm. If you have done it before you should know what happens, don't go far from a toilet.
I have done the prep twice because of my family history. I was started on digit exams during physicals at 26 years old. I like using the solution much more than I liked catching my feces and pulling samples to mail in (a sickening process for me that I hated, I was glad when colonoscopy came out).
