RICHMOND, Va. -- A powerful new display at the Virginia War Memorial in Richmond honors the nearly 12,000 Virginians who made the ultimate sacrifice since World War II.

The inaugural “Hill of Heroes" display, which was installed Saturday morning, features 12,000 American flags on the hillside next to the Shrine of Memory.

Kate Belleman, Virginia War Memorial’s Sales and Events Manager, said between 60 to 80 volunteers, including Boy Scouts, installed the flags to represent the Virginians killed in World War II, Korea, Vietnam and the Persian Gulf conflicts.
