In reply to the discussion: so I was in a major car accident Friday afternoon, grateful to be alive. [View all]bucolic_frolic
(43,027 posts)I've had drivers running stop signs and red lights this summer. I could have had 2 of them. I would have hit them, even though they ran the light/sign. How would one ever prove that? Witnesses? Like anyone wants to get involved.
So my defensive driving now includes - braking with left foot, which is on the pedal but not depressed at all times. I've done this for 25 years after traversing a torrential rain storm. It does reduce braking time.
I also watch what other drivers are supposed to do more closely at lights, stop signs.
And instead of merely watching down the road 6 car lengths to see where I'm going, I now also pay closer attention to cars that are immediately passing me in the oncoming lane. THIS, because of texters. I saw a guy in a flatbed truck texting and drifting into my lane. He recovered in time, I swerved in time, but that outcome could be different sometime. So better to be defensive/aware of what is happening.
Buckle up! You can't control everything, but you can reduce risk.
