or Utilitarianism, and this concept was used to preserve the forest system for instance, when the president was Theodore Roosevelt, who was a republican for a while and also started a new party of progressives, the bull-moose party. The platform asserted that "to dissolve the unholy alliance between corrupt business and corrupt politics is the first task of the statesmanship of the day". Roosevelt was a trust-buster.

I think republicans today go by the maxim, "the greatest good for me".
